It started with what she thought was an eye infection. Her eye would not stop watering. She wanted to get it treated before coming to Dallas for the twin's first birthday. They gave her drops to clear up the infection. They did not work. She went back and they tried again. She went back again and they thought it may be a blocked tear duct. At this point, it was driving her nuts because her eye was watering so much that it was a constant stream of tears down her face. The Ophthalmologist sent her to the ENT to discuss a surgery to clear the duct. The ENT was not sure that it was a blocked tear duct and did a CT scan of her nose/eye area. He found an infection that he wanted to remove surgically. She had the surgery on December 21st and it helped for a bit. We made it through Christmas and she was feeling good but was still a bit concerned that the problem was not fixed. The following Monday was her follow-up with the doctor. He told her that the pathology reports of the infection showed some bad news.
The official name of her cancer is Extranodal NK (Natural Killer) T-cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type. This is a very rare cancer and very aggressive cancer. After several tests (PET Scan, Bone Marrow Biopsy and several blood draws) they have diagnosed her as Stage 1, Localized. At stage 1, this is is a very curable cancer and she is going to fight hard against it. She has an amazing team of supporters and we are all working to make sure we keep up with what is going on and ensure she is as comfortable through this process as possible. Currently, she is in New York getting treatment from a specialist at Sloan Kettering. She will have to stay in NY for the next 3 months. Southern Lady in the Big Apple!
