Carson is getting ready to undergo a bone marrow transplant this month at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor as a treatment for Aplastic Anemia. Aplastic Anemia is a bone marrow failure disease in which your bodies own immune system is attacking the bone marrow. In Carson's case, he has what is considered idiopathic AA. Basically, this means they have no idea what triggered the disease in him. When he was diagnosed, several tests were done to determine if he had a genetic cause for this
disease and they were all negative. He has been battling this disease for almost a year now and none of the treatments he has tried have worked. He has continued to need blood transfusions every 10 days or so and his platelets and white blood cell count have remained very low. Throughout the past year he has typically had a hemoglobin level which is half of what a kid his age should have even with transfusion but he has not let it stop him from living his life. He has kept an amazing attitude through this battle so far and we are hopeful he will keep it up as he goes through the transplant process. Just this past week State Champs, which covers local sports did a follow up story on him that is you can watch here.
