Carolyn Nell Ferm, nee Fields, passed from this life Sunday, June 18, 2017. She fought breast cancer for about 2 years and her decline into death was mercifully short, though unexpectedly sudden.
A complete funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 15, at St. John's Lutheran Church 4501 7th Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201 Phone: (309) 786-6333 Fellowship including a light luncheon will follow the service.
Carrie was born in Grand Haven, Michigan in 1936. She had 4 siblings: Wayne, Mary Anne, Sally, and Marcia. She married Martin Ferm in 1955, and they had 4 stunningly wonderful children: Lorece Ann (married to Randy Aitken), Barret Alan, Jillann Eve Krieger, and Jay Bryson (married to Jayney Reuter). Carrie has 6 equally stunning grandchildren: Joel and Ryan Ferm, Dmitri and Aidan Krieger, and Leah and Lianna Ferm.
The "Martin & Carrie Ferm" family lived in Muskegon, MI; Springfield, VA; Sault Ste. Marie, MI; and Rock Island, IL, the latter for 49 years. Carrie continued to live in Rock Island as an empty-nester, and eventually as a widow, until she moved to Fairbury, IL to share a house with Jill.
She worked as an Activities Director at a nursing home and an in-patient mental health facility before becoming the Periodicals Clerk at the Augustana College Library, from which she retired after a long and productive career (it was rumored they had to hire TWO people to fill her shoes). After retirement she worked part-time as an usher at the I-Wireless Center and volunteered at hospitals both in Rock Island and Pontiac, IL.
She participated in the original Women's March on Washington in the '60s in support of the Equal Rights Amendment, and again in support of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
She was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island and First Presbyterian Church in Fairbury.
