Carolyn (aka Mom) is in a tough struggle with Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). For many years this did not affect her in a significant way but over the past few months it has taken off to the point that she is in the hospital. IPF robs you of your ability to absorb oxygen in your lungs. It also has this bad habit of having acute episodes (acute exacerbation) where the fibrosis advances quickly. This has happened such that she is now in the end stage of IPF.
Supplied oxygen supplements like you commonly see were effective until last Wednesday when she was admitted to the hospital. Their tests showed that the damage to her lungs from the IPF has increased substantially to the point that she will not be going back to her apartment. The doctors are trying to stabilize her remaining lung function so that we can make some decision on what type of care and facility she will need to be in going forward.
She is enjoying time with family but she tires easily. She is not up for visitors at this time. We will use caring bridge to communicate updates as we know more.
We wanted to let her many friends know what has happened and to keep her in your prayers. Know that her eyes are bright and she is as determined, mischievous and delightful as ever.
This is happening very fast and we are trying to get this out as quickly as possible. Please help us by forwarding the site link to others that you may think would want to know.
