Caroline found out in late Fall that she had a large thyroid goiter compressing her trachea and with further evaluation, that there was a suspicious nodule within the thyroid needing further attention.  As she was having this evaluated for planned thyroidectomy surgery, she had a CT scan of her chest that showed a suspicious small lung mass. On January 5, 2011 Caroline underwent thoracoscopy with wide excision of the lung mass and was found to also have a pleural lesion, which was removed as well.  The initial path was thought to be Carcinoid, and then potentially Squamous Cell carcinoma (unusual since she had never smoked), and now adenosquamous cell cancer with mucinoid features vs. mucinoepidermoid carcinoma thought to be from a primary head and neck source, which means it's metastatic to the lung and pleura.  We are all shocked an overwhelmed by this surprising diagnosis in our sweet friend.  Caroline reports that her oncologist recommends chemotherapy starting the week of Feb 7th.  She had a biopsy of the thyroid/neck mass today, Feb 2nd, as well as biopsy of some tongue thickening to better define the cancer to guide specific treatment.  We ask for prayers for Caroline's peace, healing and that the path forward will be as smooth as possible for her.
