Mom entered into Hospice on Thursday April 22 and is now sharing unfiltered stories in the front living room looking out at the lake that she has adored for 53 years.  This is where she has always wanted to be until the end.

 

Mom’s life long struggle with her heart went into the congestive heart failure stage in the last few years with no new silver bullet options.  As she continued to decline and the swelling of her legs (Lymphedema) progressed,  she became limited to her bedroom chair and then out to the dining room chair.  Dan has been her loving caregiver and kept her covid free and staying with her many nights.  Her mind has never slowed and she would welcome visitors for a good discussion.

 

In March, she started to have severe stomach cramps, she lost her appetite and had extreme constipation.  After “black coffee like grinds” coming up, Dan finally got her convinced it was time to get to the hospital.  They discovered she had bleeding ulcers filling up her stomach with blood and stressing her body.   They worked many days in the hospital to get her stable and then moved her to TCU (Transitional Care Unit) in WBL.  In the TCU, they tried to help her get stronger with therapy, but she was so weak it didn’t work well.

 

Friday, April 16th she was back in the emergency room with failing kidneys from the heart not keeping up and she did not have a positive response to a filtering variant of dialysis.  With input from many, Mom made her own decision to head home in Hospice care and to be with her family and friends.
