Callahan Murphy Hare was welcomed to the world on April 12th, 2021 to his loving parents Matt and Kate. Kate had a rough delivery that lead to an injury requiring immediate NICU attention. While in the NICU, additional blood work was done that returned concerning high white blood cell counts that required transfer to Nationwide Children’s hours after his birth for further testing and consultation with Hematology/Oncology.
By 19 hours of life, doctors identified that Callahan has Infant B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and began his treatment plan before he was 48 hours old. While this cancer is common in older children, congenital leukemia (developed in utero) it is very rare, approximately 1 in 5 million.
The Hares are tackling this diagnosis with optimism and hope as they navigate what will be an intense treatment plan that will require Callahan to stay in-patient through the entirety of treatment, ending with a stem-cell transplant. The family is looking at a roughly eight month hospital stay at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH.
This Caringbridge page will update friends and family with Callahan's progress and will also act as a way for you to offer your support for Matt, Kate, and Campbell. It is a very challenging time for the family so using this platform enables us to share information with everyone that is supporting us in an efficient way. Thanks to everyone for their caring words, prayers, and encouragement - keep it coming!
