Monday April 23, 2018 will be a day my wife (Ashley) and I will never forget for the rest of our lives. The day started as any other weekday with the exception of a appointment we scheduled for Brooke at her pediatrician. The appointment was scheduled for a follow up for her fractured leg as well as her color seemed pale. My mother (Lisa) met my Ashley at the pediatrician’s office to sit with Alizah and also her what Dr.Morgan had to say. She was worried about Brooke as well. Dr. Morgan took one look at her and decided she wanted to initiate some blood work due to her pale color. After patiently waiting and having no clue what was about to happen next Dr. Morgan came in and advised Ashley and Lisa that Brooke’s hemoglobin level was extremely low and that could be caused by several things including Leukemia. She advised them Brooke needed to be taken to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta as soon as possible to be further evaluated. Ashley had already called me and I ran out of work going as fast as I could. I met her at the pediatrician’s office so I could drive them to CHOA in Atlanta. Needless to say we got there in record time. They got us back very very quickly and immediately got some blood work started. A few hours later the head hematologist oncologist told us the news that no parent could ever imagine to here. Mr. and Mrs. Barrett I’m sorry to be the one to have to tell you both this but your daughter has blood cancer.
