On July 19th, 2021 Brian went in for a routine physical/diabetic check. He had recently lost weight without really trying but didn't think anything of it. His test results came back that he was no longer considered diabetic and also no longer needed high blood pressure meds! His weight had dropped about 30 lbs in the last 6 months so he was pretty happy! His test results came back with a low white blood count and low iron. The Dr. called him and said he just felt like something wasn't right and ordered a CT scan.
On July 28th he had the CT scan which discovered a large mass on his left kidney covering most but the lower lobe. It also showed some calcified nodes in his lung which they don't seem real concerned about at this time. He was then set up for a biopsy scheduled for Aug. 13th.
He met his cancer doctor, Dr. Jha from the U of M, on a Zoom appt Aug. 3rd. Dr. Jha decided that after seeing Brian's CT scan, he didn't need to have the biopsy as they were going to just get treatment started asap.
Brian will have immunotherapy infusions every 4 weeks with the drug Opdivo and labs will be done at this time. He also will be taking Cabometyx as a daily med to keep things flowing and working on shrinking that tumor to a manageable size to remove it, or the kidney, without causing things to spread. He will have labs done every other 2 weeks when he doesn't have the monthly infusion also. They are keeping a very close watch on him!
