Bill’s Story:
Bill was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday Oct. 11. With the plan to start Home Hospice upon return from the Black Hills, South Dakota. A trip Bill has wanted to do for quite a while, previously planned but multiple times dates revised. So Don, Grace and Bill set off immediately on The Road Trip to Mount Rushmore.
10/13/17 Mission Accomplished: X Rushmore, X Crazy Horse, X Deadwood and X the Badlands.
Upon returning home, by Saturday, Bill’s breathing became increasingly difficult. Medication was ordered but before it could be picked up we found ourselves at the emergency room. Bill ended up going home with oxygen and the prescribed meds. Home Hospice intake happened on Sunday and appointments/visits by service providers were being arranged. Bill’s cough was getting more problematic, different from his edema/swelling that landed him in the hospital the week before. By evening during Monday Night football Bill requested HELP, he was not feeling okay, breathing was labored, and oxygen was not helping. Back to the emergency room this time by ambulance. Blood work and x-ray indicated pneumonia, with blood pressure elevated and kidneys in failure. Back into the hospital. It was a rough 36 hours, Bill was not getting better. It was hard to know what to hope for. The antibiotics kicked in and the pneumonia cleared, other medications were adjusted and reduced the fluids in Bill’s legs and arms. He was feeling better.
Ronnie and Raymond arrived for support and joined Grace in Bill's care and comfort. Don and Drew maintained their daily routine and visited Bill at the hospital on the way to Drew’s work. Jennifer with puppy Gus in tow, arrived on Friday and stayed through the weekend. Bill came home on Sunday. Now we all are establishing new routines and enjoying our precious time together.
