William (Bill) Cervenka
1/12/2017 Latest post:
During the summer of 2016 Bill was infected with West Nile Virus, which is caused by a bite from an infected mosquito. Although he was not feeling well, he didn't know why. He became increasingly ill over the late summer months to the point of experiencing uncontrollable nausea, difficulty breathing, and lower body paralysis.
On Friday, September 16, 2016, Bill was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. After stabilizing his breathing through the use of a ventilator and undergoing several lab tests, x-rays, MRI's, scans, etc., they determined the reason for Bill's illness. Sadly, there was no cure for the virus which was alive & still causing damage. All that could be done was to keep him alive until the virus stopped. During his one-month stay in the ICU, the virus finally stopped and the internal damage assessment/recovery began, although interrupted by bouts of pneumonia & other complications.
On October 17, 2016, Bill was transferred to Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul. During his time at Bethesda, Bill was able to be weaned from the ventilator and resume breathing on his own. His trach was removed and he underwent daily physical & occupational therapy. Although his food source was still primarily through a feeding tube, he was able to resume eating some food.
We are all doing what we can to support Bill in his recovery & are hoping for continued progress. We've appreciated the prayers & well-wishes of so many family members & friends. Any comments & pictures shared here will be read to Bill during our visits. Bill wants to keep in contact with everyone.
