Bert began coughing up blood Christmas Eve morning and was admitted to ICU at Clear Lake Regional Hospital. It was determined that Bert had bleeding in his left lung. After several unsuccessful attempts to cauterize the blood vessels, Bert needed more advanced care and was transferred to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center on Saturday, December 30, 2017. On New Year’s Day, Bert underwent a lobectomy on his left lung and was put on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
