Bennett Lewis

My son, Bennett Lewis (age 11), started experiencing a sore knee at the end of basketball season. We assumed it was probably overuse and it seemed to get better after the season ended. A few weeks ago we noticed he started to limp, so we took him in. Thank God his pediatrician ordered an X-ray! Friday, May 6th the X-ray showed a tumor on his lower left femur.  The following Friday he was sent to the University of Iowa hospital for a biopsy and port placement. He was then diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that typically starts in children. He will start chemotherapy at Blank Hospital in Des Moines, IA this week. His plan is to do all of his chemotherapy in Des Moines. However, his surgeon is based in Iowa City. In August they will remove part of his femur and replace it with a prosthetic bone that will actually grow as he grows! This is done with the help of a strong magnetic treatment also done in Iowa City. I am already amazed at what his team of doctors can do! He will also have a knee replacement at that time. He will have chemo for 3 months before surgery and 6 months afterward. We figure he will be in the hospital for 1/3 of the next year. We have already felt the outpouring of support from family and friends. In order to keep up with communication, we will continue to write journals here to keep you updated. Prayers are appreciated for Bennett, his sister Avery (age 16), brother Jackson (14) and Matt and I.

My sister in law has set up a Go Fund Me for Bennett, which you can find here.
