BECCA'S STORY

Last Saturday (March 19th)  while on vacation with family in sunny Florida, pregnant with twins and shortly after winning several games of tennis, our tough Becca complained of a sore throat. Things progressed rapidly. On Sunday she went to urgent care and was diagnosed with bronchitis induced asthma.   She got progressively worse on Sunday night. Early Monday morning she was  taken to the Naples hospital. There she was diagnosed with influenza A, H1N1 with ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome).  Her breathing deteriorated and she was intubated, placed on a breathing machine and air lifted to the hospital in Fort Myers, Florida early Monday afternoon.  By late Monday afternoon the infection had progressed to the point where even with maximum oxygen and ventilator support they were unable to provide Becca's body with the oxygen it needed.  She was placed on ECMO (a form of heart and lung bypass).  This form of technology along with the fact that Becca's heart had also been compromised by the H1N1 virus required that she again be airlifted to a facility that could care for her.  On Monday evening was airlifted to Tampa General hospital a Level 1 trauma center in Tampa, Florida.  Tuesday morning while on ECMO Becca was, as always tough and optimistic, giving the nurses the two thumbs up and was even able to write instructions to the nurses.  She and her husband were able to communicate their love to each other.  Later Tuesday afternoon and evening despite maximal antiviral treatments and heart/lung support Becca began to lose her battle with the virus as it attacked multiple organs.  Wednesday morning Becca along with her twins passed away peacefully in the arms of her family.

A rejoice memorial for Becca and twins will be held at Hope Glen Farm on Sunday, April 3, 2:30pm at 10276 East Point Douglas Road S in Cottage Grove, MN 55106, please dress accordingly for the weather.
