BEATRIX - "She Who Brings Happiness; Blessed"
On the evening of Monday, August 26, 2019, Ashley, Patrick and big brothers Axel and Crosby welcomed their sweet baby girl, Beatrix Joy Warren. Beatrix, or "Bea," is loved and adored beyond measure.
Bea was born at 36 weeks, around 10 hours after Ashley checked-in to Holland Hospital to begin induced labor. Weighing in at an impressive 8 lbs., 2 oz. (dang, girl!), sweet Bea was initially placed in the Special Care Nursery for a bit of extra monitoring of her blood sugar levels and some assistance maintaining her oxygen levels. On Tuesday morning, Bea's care team recommended that she be moved to the NICU due to her persistent low blood sugar levels. Following additional blood analysis, Ashley and Patrick learned that Bea's white blood cell count was very high - 167,000 - while a normal white blood cell count is around 12,000. Early on Wednesday morning, Bea was transferred by ambulance to DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.
Bea has been diagnosed with Transient Myeloproliferative Disorder (TMD), a blood disease found almost exclusively in newborn babies with Down Syndrome. For an infant with TMD, regulating the production of white blood cells is difficult or even impossible, resulting in the rapid overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. In many cases, the condition will resolve itself and white blood cell counts will normalize without treatment. In other cases, treatment may be needed.
At this time, Bea's condition is being closely monitored by her care team. Her most recent bloodwork showed an increase in her white blood cell count, but at this point treatment has not yet been recommended. She is receiving "bili" light treatment for jaundice, along with some breathing assistance.
Despite these challenges in her first few days, Beatrix continues to amaze her parents with her resilience and strength. She is an avid eater and pooper, has impressive neck strength (such a Warren!) and boasts some seriously irresistible baby chub. So much baby love...gah!
Ashley and Patrick are profoundly grateful for your prayers, love and support for their baby girl. While they focus on Bea, please check this page for updates and messages.
