March 31 , 2017, Friday, about 8:30 p.m. my phone rang.  The display showed a number I didn’t recognize.  My normal response would be to let it go to voice mail and then check to see who was calling.  For some reason that was not my response on the 31st.

I answered the phone and it was Dr. Nguyen, my ENT doctor from Palo Alto Medical Foundation.  He was calling to let me know that the CT Scan that I had finally had done earlier that afternoon showed a “mass” that didn’t belong in my throat.  Sally my wife was right next to me and she was hearing this as well.

He advised me that he wanted me to contact his assistant Monday morning and get a Head and Neck MRI scheduled, a Chest MRI scheduled and see another Doctor in the ENT department to draw fluid from the lymph nodes in my throat.

When I hung up, there was a peaceful quiet between Sally and I and we opened ourselves up to a wonderful hug that was gentle, while being firm and letting me know that she was with me in whatever was coming.

I closed my eyes and thanked God for Sally a wonderful, loving, kind, beautiful, giving woman and let Him know that I knew He was going to be with us, leading us through the journey that lied ahead.

We talked over the weekend and made the decision to tell our children, Shannon and Scott and their spouses, Chris and Jane!  They were strong, emotional and quiet.  Yes, there were tears on both ends of the phone!  Why wouldn’t there be!  We would also let our brothers and sisters know as well.  You can’t expect that people will be praying for you if you don’t tell them you need prayer and why.

The next week was loaded with MRI appts and doctor’s visits all which confirmed that there was a “mass” in my throat and the only way to know what it was for sure was to do a biopsy.  I went in on April 10th for the biopsy and received a call as we were driving back from Yosemite on the 15th that confirmed that I had tongue cancer, squamous cell carcinoma and that it had migrated into the lymph nodes in the throat.  News would come later that day that the Chest MRI had come back with NO sign of any sign of cancer.

Over the next two weeks I would:

·      Meet the two oncologists who would be leading the team that would be treating me.  Two very smart confident doctors who are battle tested beating this cancer.  They have let us know that there is a high success probability of beating this cancer with a chemo radiation regimen.

·      Have a medi-port and feeding tube put in my body in the span of 24 hours in two separate procedures, do a PET scan and meet with the nutritionist.

I’m now ready to start this regimen and beat this evil presence.

This is the most common form of throat cancer in the US and is the same type that others have had and beat including Jim Kelly, former Buffalo Bills QB and Brother in Christ and there is no reason I will not prevail over it as well.

God is fighting for me!  I am battle ready because of His presence in my heart, soul, spirit, mind, body and will.

The beautiful thing is I’m not alone!  I have my Family and Friends who love me with me.  If you are reading this consider yourself to be part of both.  We will do this together.  This is the time to let God’s Love, the most powerful force that we will never fully understand become the focal point of our lives!

 PERFECT LOVE CAST OUT FEAR!

I will keep you up to date on this journey!

 We are BATTLE READY!

I’ve been feel’in the love, prayers and thoughts of sooooo many over the past month. It’s overwhelming at time.  But keep them comin!  Overwhelmed is a good place to be when it comes to being loved!
