We don't know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice we have.
As I sit here starting my second Caring Bridge page, I can't help but wonder. I wonder about life, I wonder about the journey of a persons life, I wonder about fate, I wonder about just how much God can put on a persons test of faith, I wonder about how much love a mother can have for her child.
A couple of weeks ago my daughter Ashlee Hering, only 31 years old, began a journey that will test her faith in God, her faith in her doctors, and a test of her strength. On Wednesday, Ashlee went into the Rochester Mayo hospital to have a OBGYN Oncology surgeon remove a mass from her left ovary. She hoped, and we all prayed it would turn out to be a benign tumor. We, along with her doctor were not expecting to hear what it really was. As I sat and waited far longer than the surgery was supposed to take, I knew something was wrong. I was correct.
Her surgeon finally came to tell me what she found. The mass was a 9.8cm lymph node filled with cancer. The "bump" on her cervix was Cervical Cancer. Stage 3. Shock is an understatement for me, for her, and especially for her loving husband. This was quickly followed up with a pet scan to see if it had spread to other organs. The results showed a good number of lymph nodes that were positive. BUT! No other organs effected! This gave Ashlee the possibility to beat this and survive - and survive she WILL!
What is next for Ashlee? A long journey. She will have 4 different teams of doctors, that are as we speak, creating a plan. A plan to save her life.
Those of you that know Ashlee, know that she is a very strong willed young woman. When she was little she did what ever it took to be better and faster than her older sister Brittany. When she was 4 she wanted to show her dad how she could do karate. She showed us her high kick - that kicked her older sisters front teeth out. As time went on Ashlee was her little sisters savior. She protected her, taught her how to survive high school, and always had her back.
Ashlee is an amazing mother to 2 beautiful children Chase and McKenzie who adore her. Her love for them and her husband Trent will be her incentive and strength to BEAT CANCER! They need her to have the strength to beat this. They need the prayers of all their family, the Herings, the Cherwinkas, their friends and family to beat this.
Please keep Ashlee, Trent, Chase and McKenzie in your daily prayers.
