On Tuesday evening, May 24th Art suffered a brain bleed that came on suddenly and unexpectedly. He was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital where he was taken to surgery to correct the bleeding and relieve pressure on his brain. As I write this, he has been in the ICU since Wednesday morning. Yesterday (Thursday) he was taken off of sedation medication to assess both neurological function and whether or not his respiratory drive would return. He is currently in a coma with very little neurological function, however; he is attempting to breath on his own and is responsive to pain stimuli in all of his extremities. The doctors say that it is too early to predict his outcome at this time, but they remain "cautiously optimistic".
Mom is holding up as well as can be expected and will try to respond to text messages, or messages on here as she can. She is not ready to field phone calls yet, so please limit communication to those modes.
