Our husband and father aka "Arny" was diagnosed with oral cancer on January 9th. He was diagnosed with stage 4a oral squamous cell carcinoma. He will have surgery at the University of Iowa hospital in February. Once Arny is healed he will have six weeks of radiation also in Iowa City.
All this started in the beginning of December when Arny thought he had a canker sore under his tongue. A regular visit with his dentist leads to seeing an oral surgeon and then to a local ENT with CT scans that showed his tumor. In January Arny had a biopsy that confirmed he had cancer. Following up at the John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines Arny learned it was stage 4a and the cancer is located on the floor of his mouth and tongue also which metastasized to the lymph nodes in his neck.
The John Stoddard Cancer Center referred us to the University Iowa hospitals as they are top five in the nation for head and neck cancer treatment. Iowa City will become a temporary home for our family which all of us are happy about as Arny loves the Hawkeyes.
