Antero Tomas

Wednesday afternoon (Sep 8) Antero had a massive stroke while he was alone in his office. He was not found for 7 hours.  He had logged into the lab at 11:45 am. Beth “found” him by alerting security at his building when he didn’t arrive home at his usual time that evening.. By the time she got to the hospital where he was taken he was conscious but very weak. He did recognize Beth.  He was then transferred to Northwestern University hospital in Chicago due to their high level stroke program. During the night his brain began to swell so much that they had to intubate him and take him for emergency surgery to remove a 6” diameter piece of his skull to save his life.  She was by his side all day Thursday and he never woke up. Had minimal responses to painful and noxious stimuli. Beth was called again Friday morning that they had to take Antero back for another emergency surgery to remove a hematoma (bleeding) from his brain.  Again to save his life.  Beth finally met with the Neurologist that afternoon. She did not have hopeful news. She said that Antero will never work again. That he will be fully dependent for all his needs… if he lives.  And that’s a big if.  Today she spent the day at his bedside. He is now only responding to noxious stimuli. And that has decreased.  His white blood cell count has increased depicting infection.  Beth and the girls are together and supporting each other.  Some very hard decisions will have to be made in the next few days.  Please feel free to leave messages here for the family. They are warmed by all the responses. There is a donate button at the top of the page. That is for Caringbridge.  That money will support Caringbridge. Not Beth.  We will be setting up a GoFundMe for the family for medical expenses and to pay the bills. I will be updating this site, hopefully daily.
