The events of the past couple days have taught me much about myself, and a few universal truths. I learned, for instance, that while wounds can be inflicted easily upon those we love, it’s often much more difficult to heal them. Yet the process of healing those wounds provided the richest experience of my life.

Angela was involved in a boating accident on Friday afternoon and was airlifted down to North Memorial Health. She crushed both of her lower legs and has had a couple of surgeries already with a few more to go. It has been scary and she has had to suffer through an unfathomable amount of pain. She is the toughest woman I know and I am grateful to be sitting next to her now while she peacefully sleeps. Sitting with her and holding her hand brings me comfort and happiness.

Through this tragedy, we have found strength. We have found gratitude and we have deepened our love for each other and those around us. We are grateful for our neighbor who came to our rescue. We are grateful for the family and friends that were involved and how everyone stepped up. We are grateful for the Ambulance and air crew. We are grateful for the nurse aids, nurses, nurse practitioners, and doctors and their gifts and unending support. We are grateful to have one of the most renowned plastic surgeons and the gifts he carries in his head, heart, and hands. We are grateful for our family and friends who have made sure our kids and us our well taken care of. We have been blown away by the beautiful messages, words of encouragement, gifts, love and support. We feel your love and support and thank you from the deepest areas of our hearts. It means the world to us and we are forever grateful. We are grateful for the power of God and the healing he has provided thus far and ask for your continued prayers for healing, strength and a full recovery.

The gift, the silver lining, the light in this darkness through it all has been how it has deepened my love for my amazing wife. She is the light of my life and I look forward to the countless beautiful memories we will continue to make together.

I ask you to hold onto the ones that you love. Hug them tighter, hold them closer, and let them know how much you appreciate and love them. Then, for one minute, walk outside, stand there, in silence. Look up at the sky and contemplate how amazing life is.

We love you all and appreciate you!
