Welcome to Drew's Caring Bridge Page. We are going to use this as a method to keep our friends, family, and loved ones up to date on Drew's battle! Here is Drew's story:
Drew (Drew Bear to his family) has always been the sweetest most energetic little boy. He attends Sacred Heart Preschool and loves to play with blocks, trucks, and cars. He also loves to play with his Sissy (Amelia) more than anything. Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, Drew began to come down with mysterious high fevers in the middle of the night. He would really have a difficult time getting comfortable and bringing the temperature down. We were thinking he was just battling a virus because during the day he would perk up and seem to improve. After about 5 days of this repeating we took him to the Emergency Room at Louisville's Norton Children's Hospital. A standard blood count showed there were abnormal "blast" cells in his bloodstream. A bone marrow biopsy would need to be performed the following day.
On Wednesday, November 30th (ironically the Feast Day of St. Andrew) our worst fears were confirmed. The results confirmed a diagnose of B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This is the most common form of all pediatric cancers, though still a rare diagnosis. As most of you know Andrea is a hospitalist here at this very hospital. Drew is in great hands here at Norton Children's and every physician and staff member in this hospital is staying active to make sure Drew wins this battle. We will try to stay up to date with posting about Drew's progress and ways that people can help.
