Our 19 yr old son, Aidan was in a bad accident riding an electric skateboard that goes up to 28 mph on Friday, 1/29/22 just after 12:30am. His friends found him unconscious and bleeding from a laceration on his head. He was transported unconscious to a level 1 Trauma Center. He was intubated immediately, started seizing shortly thereafter. They did a CT Scan and then we waited. He was admitted to ICU floor around 4am. They allowed us to be with him in the Emergency ICU bay and then brought us up to his ICU room after they settled him in so we could say goodnight. Visiting hours were way over (at 8pm the night before) but they knew we needed to be with our son without us even asking. Initial CT scan showed slight bleeding in the brain. Did not show broken bones (that's a praise!). They told us to go home and try to get some rest at 4:30am.UPDATE: 1/29/22-We got back to the hospital at 7:30am (0 hours of sleep, more like tossing and turning with my eyes closed and nightmare thoughts of my son seizing with tubes coming out of him everywhere). Only one of us could be in the hospital with him. Travis told me to go in and be with him. My heart broke just a little more.1 CT scan and 1 MRI scan of the head this morning. CT scan showed no changes, MRI showed confirmation of a DAI injury which is a type of TBI (traumatic brain injury). Neuro Surgeon showed us his scans and pointed out the dark spots on his brain that are a sign of significant trauma. These types of brain Injuries happen when the brain literally moves with so much force that it puts small tears. Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI is the shearing (tearing) of the brain's long connecting nerve fibers (axons) that happens when the brain is injured as it shifts and rotates inside the bony skull. DAI usually causes injury to many different parts of the brain. Aidan's brain has a lot of these! We are devastated! The Neuro Doc laid out for us that we literally have to take it a day at a time. We don't know how long the recovery will be or if and when he will regain consciousness. This road looks to be a very long one ahead for Aidan and our family.
But God... He is our Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light In The Darkness, Our God, that is WHO YOU ARE!!!!He is our strength when we are weak. We are leaning into Him SO HARD. Thank you for all of your prayers, messages of encouragement and support during this very difficult time. We as a family have jointly have received 1,000's of messages of empathy, prayers and heart-felt LOVE. We are so very thankful to have such care and love for our precious son. ♡
♡♡I ask you to strengthen me Lord, and prepare me for this day (and the long days ahead)-- transforming my fear into confident trust. Amen ♡This is going to be SO HARD. The hardest of the hard that we've ever dealt with. Thank you to everyone for your love, support and encouraging words during this difficult time.
