Aaron was born with a genetic mutation on the MYH9 gene. There is no family history of this so it is believed the 'mutation' occurred in Aaron. His exact diagnosis is called Epstein's Syndrome. Googling that will get you some useful yet confusing information. Long story short, Epstein's Syndrome can contain four things; giant platelets with a low platelet count, kidney dysfunction, hearing loss, and cataracts. Aaron has 3 of the 4. No cataracts yet!
Growing up it seemed the giant platelets were the main concern. And at that time they were. Fast forward to Aaron's early 20's where some kidney slowing was observed. The kidney disease progressed to the point we are at now; transplant time.
In true Flatau family style, Aaron's family rallied around him and his youngest brother, Jon, turned out to be a "perfect match". Jon and his family never hesitated that Jon be a donor. He passed all the tests that Mayo put him through and we are set for transplant on June 29, 2017 with Jon as the living donor!
