Bunke was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2014, faced 18 rounds chemotherapy and had a partial leg amputation known as rotationplasty to attempt to remove the cancer from her left leg. Her mother Vicki recorded various aspects of Bunke’s health journey on a CaringBridge blog.

Even now, they serve as a reminder to her about her son – even while he was battling Stage 4 Ewings sarcoma. “When they came to do his Make-A-Wish, he didn’t ask for anything for himself he asked for something that would benefit or be nice for the whole family to use,” Schilling said to WEAU 13 News on Tuesday.

Even though Sona Mehring realized long ago that nursing was not her thing, she still found a way to help millions of people around the world during their health crises. Sona — a 1983 UW-Eau Claire computer science graduate — retired in June from CaringBridge, a website she founded 20 years ago to help patients’ families and friends easily connect and communicate during a medical crisis.
