Derek was diagnosed 8/03 with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma
Derek has completed 5 surgeries, 6 rounds of chemo, a stem cell transplant and 12 rounds of radiation.
Derek has completed a Phase II 3F8 Monoclonal Antibody Study for Neuroblastoma at MSKCC in New York.

Wow it has been a long time. Caringbridge changed their set up and I finally had Shawn figure out how to log on for me. This summer was very different for Derek in some ways. We started by visiting my parents at Duke while my Dad had a bone marrow transplant. Derek did not mind the trips and would even pack himself. My Dad passed away on July, 8. Derek is not able to understand all that happened. We just told him Poppaw Curt went to live with Jesus. He would ask us where he was or would he be sitting in his chair in the living room. He even packed a back pack and would not leave my mom's house one night. I think he was afraid Mommaw Donna was going to go away. Never an easy time for children with or without reasoning problems. We did camp a few time. Derek loves everything about camping. He loves to bike, hike, swim, and golf. We tried to swim and play outside every day we were home. He went to two amusement parks and loved the rides. We have been working with his Dr. to get his meds adjusted. He had several test this summer for his cognition. Basically he is considered a medicine induced head injury. Able to learn yet missing pieces of the overall puzzle. School has started for us. He is focusing so well this year. I am pushing the reading. Still unable to do phonics because of his hearing loss. Sight reading takes lots of practice. He is looking forward to going to Church camp with our church. We also have a Disney trip scheduled. Thank you all for checking on us and praying.
