Katie Rose Woods

Brenda and Katie at her 4 year OT check-up!.

Congratulations Baby Girl!
Four Years Off Treatment!
September 16, 2008

Welcome to our child's webpage. It has been created to keep family and friends informed about her fight against ALL(Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.)

Katie was diagnosed on June 27th 2002 at the age of 3 1/2. She achieved remission by day 14 of treatment. KATIE HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED TREATMENT ON SEPTEMBER 16TH 2004!

I thought I would post what normal blood counts are in healthy children so that you have something to compare Katie's counts to:

WBC 5.5-15.5
Hemoglobin 11.5-14.5
Platelets 150-450
ANC Anything over 1000 for a child on chemo is good

Don't forget to give Katie Rose a hug!

Has it seriously been a year since I've updated? Where does the time go? When we first began this journey we were told that 5 years OFF TREATMENT meant that Katie would be cured. All I could think of was, "I don't want my baby to be 11!" In the same respect, for obvious reasons, I wanted my baby to be 11! Now here we are coming up on her 10th birthday, it really just blows me away!

Katie had her check-up in August and everything was great! All her blood counts were in the normal range. The only concern her doctor had is that he may want her to see a pediatric orthopedic because she STILL walks on her tip-toes! This is nothing Leukemia related, just something she has always done, if fact, she is more clumsy if we make her walk on her feet! He thinks that because she has been doing it so long that her muscles in her calves could be too tight, not letting her walk normal. He doesn't want her to have foot/leg problems later in life so he told us he would speak with someone regarding this and get back to us. Other than that, she is growing continuously and is very healthy!

We did have quite a scare with Nicholas over the summer though. Back in June he had quite a high fever for a few days and needed some blood work. The test showed that he had some kind of infection, but we didn't know what. He was treated and was fine. Then, 6 weeks later, he once again came down with a terribly high fever and after dealing with it for 4 days I took him in. Again, blood work was done and the call I received sent shivers up my spine. Dr. Jain said, Nicolas's White Count is low, and his Platelets are low. I completely freaked, of course! He told me that it could be from the virus, if I didn't know what I know I wouldn't have been so scared. We had to wait over a week to have them check again and everything turned out fine. I made some phone calls during that week to Marshfield to talk to Brenda and made her be straight with me as far as Nick's diagnosis. She was very reassuring, but I was a nervous wreck for that entire time. I thought those feelings were long since behind me and WHAM! without notice there they are right at the surface. Will I EVER stop worrying?

So, we have had a very busy year. Mostly summer. Jeff's dad came up for Father's Day to spend a few days just hanging out. It was really nice. Then the kids played soccer. I coached Katie's team this year, but man too stressful! Now I know how those football coaches feel! Speaking of football, I am still in denial about Brett Favre not being a Packer. I have given up watching football, I try, but it's so hard to see Aaron Rodgers in that position (he's not anywhere near as pretty as Brett) and then it's hard for me to see Brett in that "other" teams uniform.

School is going great! I have 2 new students this year! Emily and Hallie have joined us. Emily is very bright and being more challenged this year using the Calvert curriculum. Nicholas is soooo smart too, he just surprises me everyday with something else that he knows that I am expecting to have to spend 30 minutes teaching him. Katie is happy to have a classmate! She is once again in Girl Scouts. Meghan and Ryan are both in a virtual public school and doing well. Meghan does want to go back to school next year, however, and I told her she can give it a try. Ryan wants nothing to do with that. He has his temps now and is proving to be a very good driver. They both worked so hard over the summer and both put away moocho denaro! Ryan will be buying a truck in the Spring when he turns 16. They will most likely make him a waiter next year, and I was told they do not do that usually until they are 17! We are so proud off all the kids! Jamie is out on her own. She didn't go back to Point this year, but has her application in at Nicolet to get into their nursing program. She will be taking some classes this winter to get all her prerequisites in. She did earn 27 credits from Point so that helps.

Gosh, is there anything else? I guess that sums it up in a nutshell. I would hate to tell you that I will write sooner, but chances are it won't be until our next big milestone, 5 years!

OMG! I almost forgot! Katie was the Speaker at the Relay for Life this year, and she and Hallie, and Meghan just donated their hair to Locks of Love of Saturday! There are pictures in the album. I am sooo sooo proud of her! The girls have now decided that they will do this once a year!

I guess if I think of anything else I will add it later. Please take time to sign the guestbook so that I know you are still checking in! Thank you all for your support over the last 6 years....

Love Keri
