I took care of Helen while she was in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit in Wichita and my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. We continue to pray for Helen and for a breakthrough in her responsiveness. Glad to read your wonderful social worker's comments, too--and that "miracles happen everyday at Via Christi". Remember the summer of 1988 (back when we lived next door to you) and the miracle we witnessed in our Ruthy? Prayers from so many were what helped keep us going that summer, so it is a priviledge for us to now be praying daily for Helen (and all of you)-- and for a miracle for her!! Greetings from Via Christi St. Francis! I just wanted to say this is an tremendous communication tool for everyone to keep up with Mr. and Mrs. Peterson. I have learned much about them from all of you, like...the black jelly beans and the peanut butter cookies (Steve, be sure to ask him about peanut butter cookies tomorrow!) I also wanted to give you another tool of communication which our medical center offers. It is a service where you can email messages directly to the medical center and they are printed and delivered daily to Mrs. Peterson's room. The web site is "www.via-christi.org". Then you click on "popular pages". Then click on "patient e-mail." That will bring up a form which you can fill out. Helen's room number is "NC14-01". The campus is "St. Francis". Then you write your message to them. It is nice for the patient or family to receive printed messages that way. I love the "caringbridge guestbook" and will share that concept with other social workers for future reference. Mr. Peterson has done a tremendous job of "keeping things together." It has to be difficult to be heading for Arizona one minute, then suddenly be "stuck" in Wichita. I enjoy his "checking in with me" as I don't do well in getting up to Helen's room when he is there. It was neat to meet each of the boys as I have heard so many good things about them and each of their families. Let me know if there is anything I can assist with on this end to make things go better here. I can wash laundry without things turning pink!!! Talked to my folks (the Findlays) last night. They had just returned from Palms Springs (97 degrees, too hot!) and Los Angeles (66 degrees, too cool!) They were glad to get back to Arizona (just right!) We were all surprised to hear about the Antigo Flood of 2004. Can't believe the footage we saw on TV. Just checking on Helen's progress and wanting to send more smiles and prayers your way. It sounds like recovery is moving forward slowly but surely. Patience is a virtue, I have heard, and understand how frustrating all this must be. Stay positive and know we are praying for you!
Tom & I were in Antigo last night for the best fish fry in the area (Heartbreakers) and met up with mom and Sherri. Tom had to scoot out early to go back to mom's house so he could HEAR what was going on with the Badgers. Seeing it from the table was not enough. What a game! We made it to a few games this year and really have enjoyed watching them! Hopefully a win is in the cards for Sunday. We checked into tickets, but it looks like they will be hard to come by. I hope you hook into a broadcast of the game somehow!
Anyhow, just wanted to stay in touch and let you know you are always in our thoughts and prayers!

Darlene has been good enough to keep us up to date regarding Helen and is e-mailing this story for us.
So, it's communion at the methodist church. Two stations are set up - one on each side of the alter. Bev and I are seated in the middle section, one couple in. The ushers "escort" one row at a time starting with the front side section. I know it will be some time before they get to our middle section so I go into my "church trance", where I look around and think deep thoughts. Some time later, the couple next to me got up and started walking towards the back of the church. I poked Bev to follow me. I glanced back as I left the pew and she was behind me, but , no one else from the pew! Then I looked at the couple I was following, they weren't called by the ushers, they were leaving the church! I had the deer-in-the-head lights look. We were picked off. We were hung out to dry. All eyes were on us as we twisted in the wind. Finally an usher noticed our dilemma and heard me say "I thought it was our turn." She let us pass. Returning to the pew after receiving communion, with all eyes on us again because we were the only ones coming up the middle aisle, I heard one lady whisper to another lady -"Snowbirds!"

I read the update on medical progress and talked to mom earlier. It sounds like your road to recovery is underway with SO MANY well wishes and prayers... mine included.
Perhaps this was a way for the man upstairs to get you to stay home in Antigo, closer to that new grandbaby, instead of enjoying the sun in snowbird land!!
Stay positive, listen to those great doctors and nurses, let your boys (and daughter-in-laws) take care of you, and get back home to enjoy little Jacob! I will keep you in my prayers.

Great news! I look forward to your daily updates. Pete, you and your family are an inspiration to us all. Obviously, you have a lot of support and I'm sure that Helen will have the best result possible. Since it is Sunday, I wanted to share the following little story, entitled ONE SUNDAY MORNING.
One Sunday morning, the minister noticed little Johnny staring up at the large plaque in the foyer of the church that was covered with names, small American flags mounted on either side.
The minister walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning, Johnny."
"Good morning, sir," replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. "Can you tell me what this is?"
"Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women that died in the service."
Soberly they stood together, staring at the large plaque, Johnny's voice was barely audible, trembling with fear, when he asked, "Which service - the 8:15 or the 10:30?"
