Hi Robin,
Not sure if you still read these posts, but I wanted you to know we still think about you and your precious Ashley, especially on this day. Taylor had surgery last year for her Crohn’s disease which was hoped to have given her a longer lasting remission but it sadly has not. She still powers on though, even though she is on the last biologic medication they feel may work for her, she has continued to go to the tech school and will receive her LPN pin next Tuesday (12/14/21). She will then bridge to the RN program. Being a nurse is really all she’s wanted to do since Ashley touched her life…Crohn’s just has slowed her down a bit. Even her sister, Katie, is in nursing school. We pray Ryan continues to do well along with you and the rest of your family. Have a wonderful holiday season and blessed 2022.

Hello Debes Family,
I’m not sure if you will see this because the page hasn’t been updated in awhile. But I hope you are all doing well. I see from the last post that Ryan is still cancer free, and I hope that is still the case. That makes me so happy. I still think of Ashley often, as I’m sure you all do as well. I was cleaning my room the other day and found my matching BFF necklace with her picture still inside and it made me smile. I began to reminisce on all the time we spent together and wish there was more of it. I have never spent as much time talking on the phone than I did talking with her, and I don’t think that will ever change. I still wear the other necklace she gave me for special occasions because I wish she could be here with me experiencing them. She is my most treasured and best friend and I know she still watches over us. I still have her picture by my bed with the ornament she made me hanging off of it. I can never bring myself to move it. She made such an impact on my life and I will never forget her.

I wish you all well.

9-years already - that just doesn't seem possible Ashley! Taylor has changed majors and colleges this year, but my guess is you know this already as you probably follow all the latest news on your bestie. She could use your help by putting a word in with the "big guy" for a smooth surgery on December 22 as she's having her tonsils removed. She's been plagued by throat issues since October that aren't resolving and the ENT says they need to come out, she just has to make it through finals. Extra prayers are welcome. We can't believe your little brother is so big already...wow a Fresman this year? How did that happen?! You must be doing a great job up there!! We wish your family a very blessed holiday season from all of the Jeskes here in Appleton.

Happy angel-wings day Ashley. Taylor wore your necklace when she graduated high school in June so she could feel like you did it with her! You were there with her in spirit as you are every day. I'm sure you were laughing wildly when she fell through the chair in her dorm room a few weeks ago...and continued to laugh every time you looked at the tear in the fabric! Please keep her out of trouble will ya? I know you can pull the right strings up there to make that happen! We all miss you and your bright smile but know God must be putting that to good use up there in heaven. Love to your family from the Jeskes in Appleton, Wi

Hi Debes Family: To let you know, we think of you often and can't imagine how much your kids have all grown! As Caitlin has gone through different milestones the past 7 years, always think of Ashley and how she is sharing in all of her friends' experiences as well, just from a different view. You can be assured that Caitlin has her blue lights on at her dorm room in memory of her dear friend Ashley. Always loved Ashley's positive attitude and strength. She inspired us all. <3

Robin I don't know if you remember me or not. I worked with Dr Ganick for years when Ashley was first diagnosed. She and your entire family has touched my life more than you will ever know. I am so sad to learn of Ashley's passing. I think of her all the time and still laugh when I think of her calling me CC which she told me was for chubby cheeks. I hope you are all doing well and finding peace in her memories.

I have not visited in a very long time. I was happy to read that Ryan is 11! It doesn't seem like that long ago that Postcard Cindy and I did a fundraiser at Christmastime for your family. My Alison is now 26! She is teaching and just received her master's. Tomorrow we are swimming in Swim Across America to raise funds for Childhood Cancer Research at 2 of our local hospitals.

Hi Robyn and family,
Happy Belated Birthday to Ryan. Can not believe he is 11 already, sounds like he takes after his big sister. She was way beyond her years also. Can not believe it has been five years already. I still think of her often she was such a special young lady. My mother passed away on April 10 th, I hope she will get to meet Ashley in heaven. I hope all of you are doing well. Hi, although I don't come to your page very often I do think of you always. So many things remind me of Ashley (including S'mores and when people talk about gktw I remember her few trips there on her and Ryan's trip (and when she missed a bit of Ryan's so returned). I'm so pleased to see Ryan is doing so well, I can't believe so much time has gone by and how grown up he is and how grown up Ashley should of been.

Dear Mrs. Debes,
This is Katie Jeske, Taylor Jeske's sister. (I got on the UNLESS Core Committee!) Today was the UNLESS Rally and I wanted to tell you how much we raised this year. We rasied... $24,228.67 for the American Cancer Society!!! I wanted to call you and tell you over the phone, but my mom does not have your new home phone number or new cell phone number. I was balling my eyes out because of how much money we raised and because I was SO proud of all the students. Even people who first started UNLESS are still doing UNLESS and brought it to the High School! I hope you are happy to see that number we raised, I know I am and couldn't wait to tell you how much we all raised.
Sincerely,
Katie Jeske
(P.S. In case you don't know or remember what UNLESS is, it is a group of students that was formed at Woodland School to raise money for cancer. We have now been doing it for 4 years and remember Ashley every time.)

A letter from Heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

"It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.

I need you here so badly, you are part of my plan.
There is so much that we can do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you.... in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who is in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain.

And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile."

So if you meet somebody who is sad and low;
Just lend a hand to pick them up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going.... you're coming here with me.

It's so hard to believe that on this day, 4-years ago, we got the heartwrenching news that Ashley lost her battle with cancer. Ashley's passing has stayed with us, especially Taylor. She lost the best of friends that day and will always have a place in her heart for Ashley. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your entire family on this difficult day.

Mrs. Drum @ Woodland asksed me the other day if I've heard from you recently and told me that she thinks of Ashley and your family often.

So happy to hear that Ryan is doing well after his tonsilectomy. I know so many kids have good results after having them removed. I'm sure he's bouncing back better than ever!

We wish you a Blessed Christmas season.

A Thanksgiving Poem

Dear Father who art in Heaven...
Please join our family on this Thanksgiving day
And bless each one as we sit down to pray
As we remember those who have joined You above
So dearly missed and deeply loved.

Please provide us strength on this Thanksgiving day
Bless us with memories of those faraway...
Please grant patience to family and friends as we grieve
And help us reach out to others who are bereaved.

We give thanks to You on this Thanksgiving day....
For Your presence in our lives each and everyday.
For Your comfort, guidance, and never ending love...
And for taking care of our loved ones...in Heaven above.

As we light this candle on this Thanksgiving day...
And it glows in memory of those in Heaven today....
May their lights always shine down on us and give us light...
And may we feel their presence along with Yours tonight.

May the peace and tranquility of this Thanksgiving day
Be an everlasting light within each of us along the way...
Lets bow our heads and give our Thanks to God above..
For our blessings, whether on earth or in Heaven above...
Amen

Dear Mr. Hallmark, Sir

I am writing to you from heaven,
And though it must appear
A rather strange idea,
I see everything from here.

I just popped in to visit
Your store to find a card -
A card of love for my mom,
As this day for her is hard.

There must be some mistake, I thought,
Every card so filled with worth,
Except I could not find one card
From a child whose not on earth.

She is still my mother, too,
No matter where I reside.
I had to leave, she understands,
But, oh, the tears she's cried.

I thought that as I wrote you,
You would come to know
That though I am no longer there,
I still love my mother so.

I visit with her in her dreams,
And she talks with me all the time,
She wonders if that's really me,
Would you let her know I'm fine?

She's planted many flowers,
Where my living memory grows,
She carries me with her everywhere,
No matter where she goes.

She does so many loving things,
So none will ever forget,
That I once lived and loved on earth,
Now my love she needs to get.

Oh, Mr. Hallmark, sir,
Though I no longer live on earth,
I must find a way to remind her
Of her loving, wondrous worth.

She needs to somehow receive,
My message loud and clear,
The same as other mothers will,
From children who are still there.

Thank you, Mr. Hallmark, sir,
I know you'll do your best.
For you are the one I count upon,
So to you I'll leave the rest.

Please find that way to let her know
No space or time or sea,
Will ever change the loving truth,
That my Mom she'll always be.

AND GOD SAID

I said, "God, I hurt."
And God said, "I know."
I said, "God, I cry a lot."
And God said, "That is why I gave you tears."
I said "God, I am so depressed."
And God said, "That is why I gave you Sunshine."
I said, "God, life is so hard."
And God said, "That is why I gave you loved ones."
I said, "God, my loved one died."
And God said, "So did mine."
I said, "God, it is such a loss."
And God said, "I saw mine nailed to a cross."
I said, "God, but your loved one lives."
And God said, "So does yours."
I said, "God, where are they now?"
And God said, "Mine is on My right and yours will be in the Light."
I said, "God, it hurts."
And God said, "I know."

Robin,

Just wanted to say Hi and am glad to hear that Ryan continues to remain healthy and cancer-free. I check Ashley's caringbridge page from time to time when I think about all the kids I worked with at Dr. Brandt's clinic and how grown up so many of them now are -- so hard to believe Ryan is 9 years old! I still think of Ashley often, she definitely holds a special place in many of our hearts and will do so for a long time to come. Hope you, Mark and kids are doing well and continue to heal from your loss. Take Care!

Robin, Mark & Family --

Happy to hear that your move has gone well and that the kids are adjusting to their new schools, etc. Sorry to hear about Ryan's difficult times with illness. Maybe those tonsils do have to go. A girl I work with's 3rd grader has been in and out of the doctor with strep this year and I think he's going to get them out too in hopes that strep will finally be gone! Darn tonsils!

We think of all of you often and wonder how you are doing. Taylor always enjoys reading about what you're up to. As I write, we're in the midst of a Winter Storm Warning here for 8-12 inches of snow. Yuck! I'd take those 3-inch storms you were talking about!

Take care and big hugs from the Jeskes in Appleton

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

I SAID A PRAYER FOR YOU TODAY

I said a prayer for you today
And know God must have heard.
I felt the answer in my heart
Although He spoke no word!

I didn't ask for wealth or fame
(I knew you wouldn't mind).
I asked Him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind!

I asked that He'd be near you
At the start of each new day;
To grant your health and blessings
And friends to share your way!

I asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small.
But it was for His loving care
I prayed the most of all!

Hugs and Blessings

Hi Robin and Mark,
I was thinking of Ashley all day on Dec. 8 as I was in Milwaukee at Froedert Hospital for an appointment with Bob. As I passed CHOW, I thought of the blue christmas ribbons I put up that year to honor Ashley and all of the lights your neigbors put on the tree outside. I also thought about not making it to Milwaukee before Ashley passed to heaven that night but I truly believe she wanted Jane and I to remember her differently and this is why she didn't wait for us, I still think of you all so often and just a quick note to let you know that you are still very much a part of my thoughts. Love to you all this Holiday Season and God Bless

Hi Robin,
I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of Ashley and all of you at this difficult time. I still can't believe that she is gone 3 years. I remember clicking onto her site that day. I had to reread what you wrote 3 times. I just couldn't believe it. I sat there and cried. I have never met any of you, yet you have all touched my life. Please know that I pray for your whole family all the time.

Last week in Language Arts, Taylor had to write a short essay about something that has change her life. She wrote about Ashley, whom she still refers to as her best friend. She wrote about how Ashley helped her to be brave when she got sick with Crohn's disease, how she tried to make sure she was there for Ashley when she relapsed, and how now she wants to be a pediatric cancer doctor and make a difference for other kids with cancer. I know she'll do it because she's had this goal for nearly three years now and it hasn't changed.

I've no doubt Ashley's always with Taylor as her special angel with Twinkie by her side. Happy and laughing at how Taylor's being a goofball one moment, serious the next.

It's so hard to believe it's been nearly three years now since your precious daughter got her wings. We continue to think about your family and hope all the Debes are doing well, especially Ryan, as you move forward into the holiday season.

Hugs to you all from the Jeskes in Appleton.

You did everything you possibly could to save her, but more important you did everything you possibly could to love her. I was always in awe of the type of mother you were. Yes, mothers will do anything for their children, but you never, ever complained or thought of yourself at all, through all your posts it was always about your daughter, and never about you or how hard it was for you. Not that it is wrong for parents to say how hard it is, because it isn't. But you so clearly thought only of your children and gave everything you had to them. I am so sorry you had to lose your little girl. She is free and healthy and safe, but that doesn't ease your loss. You mourn because you loved her so. And that Halloween story is one of the sweetest, it is clear your loving and giving ways were passed to your daughter. I know you will see her again and hug her again, next time forever.

We're so glad to hear Ryan is doing so well (aside from the exema -- nasty stuff! Taylor had a long bout of it when she was 5 although it would improve when winter came to an end).

We think of all of you often, and of course Ashley. She is never far from Taylor's thoughts. I was talking about Ashley at school last week. Woodland is having it's second "Shootin' for a Cure" fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Ashley helped inspire the cause and if she could see what some of these kids are doing to raise money (wash cars, mow lawns, going door to door) I think she'd be tickled! Several teachers will get their heads shaved on Friday...and there's talk that a few females are letting go of their locks as well.

Hope you don't have a long move ahead of you. I know what a headache moving can be. Take care of yourselves. We always look forward to new updates on Ryan and the entire Debes family. Have a wonderful summer!

I know how difficult Mother's day is for those whose child is now in Heaven. This poem has been a comfort to me as I pray it will be for you.

You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes & pray that she'll come back,
Or you can open your eyes & see all that she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
Or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow & live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
Or you can cherish her memory & let it live on.
You can cry & close your mind, be empty & turn your back,
Or you can do what she'd want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Moving on does not mean forgetting. Not a day will go by for the rest of your lives that you won't think of Ashley. As you move on, you still take her with you. I remember meeting your family "in person" after years online....Ashley showed us the monitor that checked her blood, as we had ice cream together....I'm so sorry that she isn't here today....but wanted you to know that we were thinking of her. I have followed your daughter's page off and on since 2003. For the first time I could see your "new" pictures and wow, what beautiful pictures of beautful kids. They are all gprgeous pix, but I absolutely love the one of Ashley on the slide.

I know you miss your girl so much. You were always a wonderful mother to her, and I hope that brings you comfort. You can tell she knew how very loved she was (and still is). She will be back in your arms again one day, this time forever. My peace and comfort and beautiful memories surround you until then. God bless you and your family.

Snow Angels
My little boy his limbs spread wide
Lays in the snow and flaps with pride.
While angel wings and gown he makes
I see an angelic smile upon his face.

My little boy is having fun
Making angels one by one.
For every impression he leaves in the snow
Another angel says a prayer he knows.

My little boy's snow angels
May melt and be gone,
But the memory of making them
In his heart will live on.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Angel_Wings

Thank You, God, for everything ...
The big things and the small,
For "every good gift comes from God" ...
The Giver of them all.

And all too often we accept
Without any thanks or praise,
The gifts You send as blessings
Each day in many ways.

And so at this Thanksgiving time,
We offer up a prayer;
To thank You, God, for giving us
A lot more than our share.

First, thank You for the little things
That often come our way;
The things we take for granted
And don't mention when we pray.

The unexpected courtesy,
The thoughtful, kindly deed,
A hand reached out to help us ...
In the time of sudden need.

Oh, make us more award, dear God,
Of little daily graces,
That come to us with "sweet surprise,"
From never-dreamed-of places.

Then, thank You for the "miracles"
We are much too blind to see,
And give us new awareness
Of our many gifts from Thee.

And help us to remember
That the "key" to "life" and "living,"
Is to make each prayer a "prayer of thanks,"
And every day THANKSGIVING.

~ Helen Steiner Rice ~

So sorry you guys are all feeling sick. I know H1N1 is making the rounds up here at schools too. In fact, Taylor's specialist cancelled her treatment yesterday because she is running a low grade fever and fighting a cold. Since he's seen a lot of those cold symptoms develop into H1N1...he didn't want to supress her immune system further with a fresh boost of Remicade. So we're watching and waiting...hopefully not too long.

With so many people getting so sick already, this early into the cold/flu season, it really makes you wonder what the next few months are going to be like! A lot of kids have been out around here...but so far no schools have closed in Kimberly.

I hope Ryan is just getting over what he already had (Kaitlyn gets a long term cough after a cold, it takes weeks to resolve) *fingers crossed*

Robin, Mark, Jennifer, Kelsey & Ryan...you All take good care of yourselves, push fluids, rest, etc. It's all we can do.

Hugs from all of us in Appleton

p/s Taylor went to camp at Trees for Tomorrow last week with the JRG 7th grade. She fell in a muddy bog in 25 degree temps up to her waist...I'm sure that didn't help her health either!

I don't sign the guestbook often, but do think of your family and pray for you every day. I followed Ashley's journey for a long time and only wish that she could have beaten the disease as did Ryan and my granddaughter Melanie. I hope you all are feeling better soon and that Ryan is able to avoid the bug.

I know you miss Ashley so very much, and I can understand the camera thing.

I'm sorry that Ryan had the crud. Seems to be going around though. Kevin was sick yesterday and stayed home - missed a day of school and it's only the 2nd full week! He's now feverish, wheezing and coughing - sounds like what Ryan had....and yes, we'll always freak over every fever, pale face, bruise, etc.

I think of you often. It's good to hear how you're all doing.

Thinking of you all this week, especially Ashley. Taylor is enjoying JRG and being a 7th grader this year, but she always thinks about her best bud and how different things would be. Kaitlyn is a 4th grader this year and will be doing the Kettle Moraine field trip in October. It's hard to believe it was just three short years ago I took pictures of Taylor, Ashley and Jaelynn up at the top of the lookout tower there. Good memories, their smiles were so big, the picture sits by Taylor's bed.

Hope school is going well for the girls as well as Ryan. We're so excited that he now gets 6 months between checkups! You go Ryan!!

Hugs to you all from the Jeske's in Appleton.

Robin,
I saw this poem on another caringbridge site and thought of you.

I give you this one thought to keep –
I am with you still – I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone –
I am with you still – in each new dawn.

Always praying for your peace and comfort.

Blessings,

Haven't checked the website for a while...but did tonight because we're watching a dog show on Animal Planet and saw the Great Pyreness and immediately thought of you with your new dog who, I'm sure, is keeping your life jumping!

How thrilled we were to hear of the great news for Ryan -- three years cancer free is an incredible blessing!!! WTG Ryan!! Good luck to Ryan with his swim classes, I'm sure he'll start to enjoy them once he gets comfortable in the water. Then you'll have the trouble of trying to get him OUT!!

Taylor talks about Ashley all the time...reminiscing about silly things they did. She's always with her in her heart and her mind...and it's nice to see her talk about Ashley so happily now. I can hardly believe Taylor's starting Middle School this fall. Ryan's a big 2nd grader now...Jennifer and Kelsey are both High School girls...where does the time go!?

You take care of yourselves. Hope you all are having a great summer.

Hugs to the Debes from the Jeskes!

Hi Family,
CONGRATULATIONS on 3 years of being Cancer-free.
May all the days add up to two MORE years so we'll be celebrating 5 years before you know it.
Blessings as you travel this journey, all while holding your angel-sis close to your hearts.
Yes, lifting up the family of your friend who lossed yet another child to the dreaded big c. Small letters in hopes of the day when a cure is found and no more families will have to suffer. Of course they're angry at the world. It's going on making the glaring heart-chasm blindingly evident. How kind of you to remember, and cue folks in. May friends stand fast.
We lost our Mom to cancer, mean nasty stuff. But her valiant spirit triumphed thru to the end, just as your precious angel did.
You brightly you each have shined (just wish there weren't such yucky reasons to do so). May every day be a celebration, every breath a treasured gift. May you go on to do great things.
Much love, honor, respect and warm support,
Ms Lu

That saying that you wrote "to the moon and back" and the part that the girls added are beautiful.

I am sorry that I have not been writing in the CaringBridge, but I do think about Ashley, Ryan and all of you all the time. And you are all in my prayers every day.

Hi Robin and family,

Robin, you write so well. I have been thinking of you and Ashley and what an incredible woman and mother you are. And how unfair life was for Ashley. I know it's natural to look back and wonder "what if," but I think you and Mark did everything you could and made all the decisions you had to. You made Ashley's life bright and full of love.

The words that stick out from your entry are "the pain of cancer". Most people associate that with physical pain but we know all too well, it means so much more such as emotional and financial.

This grief journey is a hard one and I think of you often as I pray for our children who had to leave this earth before us, for a reason we can't comprehend. May you surround yourself with good memories and over time may they overshadow any bad ones.

I think of my Ethan in heaven with strong legs, a bright white smile, a head full of hair, and more energy than he knows what to do with.

Robin & Family,
Thank you so much for your lovely post. I have printed it for Taylor. We were devastated by Twinkie's loss tonight. We worked hard for two long weeks trying to help her kick whatever was making her feel bad -- and for a while she was doing much better. As you said, we just never know when our time comes. Taylor is comforted knowing Twinkie and Ashley are reunited but still very sad just the same. It was hard for her to call you tonight and tell you the news because she felt so bad. Thank you again for your wonderful words, it will help her more than you can possibly know.

Hugs to all the Debes family from the Jeskes in Appleton

Robin & Family --
Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you all. Taylor turns 12 on Saturday and it just doesn't seem possible. We remember how much fun Ashley was when she came for Taylor's party when she turned 10 -- it seems so long ago, but also just like it was yesterday. We miss her too and have been thinking about her alot because Twinkie has been sick. We've spent a small fortune at the vet trying to get her through it because she was Ashley's bunny and she's Taylor's last physical link to her. So I'm giving her meds at home, and IV fluids daily. We won't give up on her! We can see Asley's spirit in Twinkie as she fights to get over whatever is making her sick! Lots of hugs from the Jeske's in Appleton to all of the Debes family.

Hello Debes Family,
We are hoping the New Year brings you some joy. It IS hard to get through the holidays without our Angels. 5 years ago our grandson, Cody, had the most wonderful Christmas a child could wish for. 6 weeks later he was gone. They will always be in our hearts and minds - and there will always be pain - but I feel they are with us each day to help us deal with that pain. Please know that you are not alone.

Thinking of you and beautiful Ashley today, as I do everyday. Joy for Ashley, because she is so free, free of pain, free of treatment and hospitals, free to run and jump and play and do all the things she couldn't here on Earth. Free of cancer, forever. But sadness for her family, because they miss her so and have to find a way to live without her here on Earth.

She will be back in your arms again one day Robin, and this time forever.

I am glad you could keep your kids home and seek comfort in each other. You have always been such a wonderful mother.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you today and always. Just yesterday when we were getting our Christmas tree, Lindsey remembered a time when Ashley and her had a contest to see who could hold their breath the longest. Ashley won because she was secretly breating through her nose! HI Debes Family,
Sharing thoughts and prayers for all of you to have a peace filled Christmas season. Remebering Ashley's zest for life, her beautiful smile and contagious laughter; thanking God for the gift He gave all of us in Ashley and hoping you will be comforted by memories of your wonderful daughter and sister. A year later the pain is no less, I just hope it is felt less often as time goes by. I think somebody once said something like 'to love deeply is to hurt deeply' sounds wierd, but we wouldn't ache to our souls if we didn't love with all our heart. Thank God for LOVE and may His love and the love of friends and family continue to buoy through the stormy seas of grief.

Dear Robin,
I haven't signed in a long time, even though I check your web site often for updates. I guess it's also comforting to read along the same path, with so many similar feelings and emotions. I, also, have not been able to watch home movies about Alexia. I've seen "mini-clips" from my web cam and that is hard. (And they only last seconds) I can't imagine watching hours and hours of video footage. I hope maybe one day I can. It still hurts too much, and feels too raw. I hate the feeling of the "one year" date that approaches. I will be thinking of you, and of course, your sweet Ashley.
With love, U.

Robin, Mark & Kids,
The passage of time seems lengthy yet short and we too have a difficult time grasping the fact your beautiful little girl has been gone nearly a year. Twinkie is a constant reminder of Ashley's bouncing personality. We've given her a new bunny hutch and a "bun run" and she runs out to greet people like she's a dog. Some days when I feel there's nothing to smile about, I see Twinkie and think of her as Ashley's little spyglass on us to make sure Taylor is doing okay without her. Next Thursday, we will give thanks for knowing Ashley's contageous spirit for life and her remarkably loving, brave and resilliant family.

We send you our heartfelt wishes for a peaceful Thanksgivng and pray Ryan's months off treatment continue to multiply.

Hugs to the entire Debes Family from the Jeskes in Appleton.

I'm still enjoying the slide show too, what a beautiful family!

For the pencil grip...my now 7 yr old son had the worst time with this in Kindergarten, so I am voting normal kid thing. He was given a variety of pencil grips that didn't do squat to help. What finally did help, and helped enormously, was to only let him write with little tiny pencils, the kind you find to fill out lottery slips. You can sharpen a pencil down really small for the same effect. It forces proper grip.

Now, if you could share your secrets on getting the teen girls to get their grades up! I have a 14 yr old daughter that is driving me batshit! Blowing off homework or even worse, doing it and then not turning it in (I forgot it in my locker, I lost it, etc, eyeroll!).

Haven't forgotten all of you ....Ashley and all of you are still in my thoughts and prayers...may the Lord help you to continue on...

Just wanted to share some words of encouragement…

“If we could, by some wonderful force from heaven, be allowed to slip from this earth in our present state and into the glory of heaven, we would not find one shred of evidence that reveals panic. You would never once hear “oops” from the lips of God, or “I wonder what we’re going to do about that down there?” Nor would we ever observe anxiety across the face of the living God. We would be stunned with amazement at how calm things are around his throne.

From this side of glory we see the tapestry of life from underneath. It is full of knots and twisted threads and frayed ends that lack meaning and beauty. But from God’s perspective, looking at the top of the fabric, it is all under control.”
From Encouragement for life by Charles Swindoll…

May you see that glory of God in your life today….

Robin, I have been thinking of you all so much lately. I am sorry I didn't get to post this weekend- I just got out of the hospital myself. I pray for you and your family often. I hope you celebrated the weekend with Happy Memories of a beautiful daughter who brought not only love, laughter, and joy to your family, but to everyone else's life she touched through her page and the lists. May God continue to bless you and keep your whole family today and the days ahead.

Thinking about your family today as you miss your precious Ashley. You are blessed with so many wonderful memories and wonderful pictures of her beautiful smile. Through the tears may you see her in Heaven, happy, free, full of energy, and always smiling!

Oak Creek, WI US - Sunday, September 14, 2008 8:48 AM CDT
Those pictures were beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your Ashley. The one constant in all was her beautiful smile. I hope through the tears today you also had some smiles remembering your precious little girl.

I love what someone else posted suggesting we share the gifts Ashley gave. I never had the pleasure of meeting your sweetheart, just knew her though her loving mother's posts. But her most wonderful gift to me was to learn to appreciate the here and now and no matter what, you can find a reason to smile. No matter how hard of a time she was having, it seemed Ashley always tried to make the best out of a bad situation. She was a true fighter.

Happy Birthday in Heaven sweet Ashley. I am sure God throws much better parties up there than we could ever imagine down here.

Robin,
Just wanted to let you know that we continue to think of Ashley and your family. She is a gem that will continue to shine in our lives. While there will be no gift to wrap for Ashley on Sat., we will gladly count the many gifts we have recieved for having known your beautiful daughter. Lindsey remembers and treasures the picture she has of a sleep-over when they wore footie pajamas and filled them with stuffed animals. Ashley gave the gift of laughter and silliness. We will be thinking of Ashley and your family this weekend and we hope you find peace as you continue this journey. Jeff & Beth McFarlane and Erin, Lindsey, & Colleen

I'm thinking of you, Ashley and your family this weekend. All of her birthdays as well as special holidays are hard I'm sure....an understatement I guess. Just know that we care about you all, just as we cared about Ashley.

By the way, I'm not sure I ever said this but I love the picture of her at the top of the page.

She is missed by so many. Hang in there,

She sure was beautiful, hair or not. I just wanted to let you know I remember your sweet girl and think of her often. You were always such a wonderul mother to her. I would love to see some old Ashley pictures if you ever feel like sharing. I remember finding her page for the first time in 2003 and she was only 7 and Ryan was just a little baby. Now he is all grown up! All your kids are beautiful.

This weekend we'll be thinking about Ashley too. She is never far from our thoughts. How can she be? She's a girl who touched our lives never to be forgotten. Ashley is with Taylor always, making her way into different things like computer passwords or her bike lock combination. My heart aches for you and your family, Robin. I know this will be a difficult weekend for all of you. We'll be remembering her with big smiles (as I rarely ever saw your beautiful daughter without one), thinking about what type of heavenly birthday cake she'll be enjoying, and wondering just how many cans of silly string she'll empty. God bless you and your family as you continue to work through life's daily challenges on the road to healing.

We are always thinking of Ashley here. Especially so when our dog, Jasmine, passed away over aweek ago. She was 15. Taylor was very upset at first but then comforted in knowing Ashley's up there to take good care of Jasmine in Heaven. Thank you Ashley for being there for her. I pray for you all the time, wishing for some peace. I know there probably isn't much ... and seeing a family around here go through this, I think they are in as much pain now as they were when their child died a year ago. It never goes away, I know. But that must be because Ashley will never go away. She won't even if she isn't at the dinner table with you each night. She is, as you put it, forever your little girl. I just pray you get some relief. Cannot imagine your pain...

Thinking about you all.
Taylor liked Ryan's balloon idea so this past Saturday when we were leaving Red Robin -- she asked for a blue balloon. She borrowed the hostess' sharpie and wrote a message on it for Ashley saying she hopes she's okay and she misses her, then signed it. Taylor let it go (her cousins let theirs go as well) but for some reason that blue baloon went higher than the rest because it had someone special to deliver a message to.

Hugs to all of you.

Hello - thinking about and checking in with your family. Good that Ryan is doing good - aren't they so smart and perceptive. I really feel for the ongoing challenge you have - missing Ashley so much makes total sense and I guess I would just say that whatever you feel whenever you feel it - it is normal - I doubt that helps...but I think about your family a lot. Glad to hear Ryan is continuing to do so well. Congrats on losing that tooth!! Love the story about the balloon. Ashley is always in our thoughts.

We miss Ashley's special ring tone that went off several times an evening as the girls talked back and forth. Taylor is struggling to make new friends. She feels like she doesn't fit in all the time. She's been teased and some girls have told her she should just forget Ashley -- but they have no idea how unforgettable your daughter is. They have no idea what it's like to have that one person who you could tell everything to, taken from your life. Ashley is in everything Taylor does, from passwords to her bike combination. She will always be with her. Taylor keeps saying she no longer wants to be a vet when she grows up. Instead, she now wants to be a nurse and work with cancer kids. She also wants to have a therapy dog she can take with her when she works. I think she'd be a great at it.

Sorry to make this so long. But we understand how difficult things can be. Maybe not fully -- but our hearts go out to your family. We wish you a summer full of fun, healing and perhaps even some new beginnings.

Hugs from all the Jeskes in Appleton to the entire Debes family.

That links us one and all.
We heard it our mother’s voice
Whenever she would call.

We felt it in our father’s touch.
His strength made use secure.
We feel it still in daily life;
It helps us to endure.

This never-ending golden thread
Is love personified.
It banishes all doubt and fear
When we are by God’s side.

For it is His love we’re feeling—
His love for you and me,
All woven in and through out life;
A golden tapestry!

You were a wonderful mother to your Ashley Robin, one of the most loving and giving mothers I have ever known of. Your baby is free now, but her love for you is here forever.

Happy Mother's Day, Robin.

I have met a lot of people in my life -- mothers in particular -- and I can honestly say I have never met a woman who is a stronger support system for her family than you. This is a difficult holiday to be sure. But I do know one thing: the beautiful person Ashley was inside and out could have only happened because the seeds of love you planted were cultivated to grow so well by you. Ashley too spread those seeds of love and compassion and they now grow in the people she touched every day.

Ashley, Jennifer, Kelsey and Ryan are surely blessed to have you for a mother. Happy Mother's Day to one heck of a great mom!

The Spirit of April
By: Mary E Linton ©

I am the Spirit of April.
Did you not hear me come?
Violets nod in the meadow;
See, I have brought you some.
I opened your gate so gently,
Fearing to make you start;
I bring you a note of gladness
Out of the song in my heart.

We were cleaning the basement a few days ago and I found a folded piece of paper. I was about to throw it away but thought I should look and see what it was before I did so. I turned out to be a picture of a pig with the saying "Taylor, you smell like cheeseeesseees!" on it. It was from Ashley. Taylor laughed and cried at the same time when she saw it. Then it was added immediately to her Ashley wall collage.

A couple of weeks ago Taylor saved up her points in World Studies class to buy a fortune cookie. The fortune read, "A true friend is always with you, even if invisible at times." She said Ashley made that fortune just for her to remind her she is always there. She is never far from our thoughts.

We hope everyone is doing well as we start to actually feel some spring weather. Hugs to all the Debes family from the Jeskes in Appleton.

THIS DAY'S GREATEST GIFTS
We can't change the past…
But we can gather up
It's lessons and move on,
Stronger and wiser.
We can't control the future…
But we can send our dreams
Ahead of us
To help prepare the way.
We can live each moment…
Heart and soul,
And cherish this day's
Greatest gift…
The gift of now.
May peace with the past
And faith in the future,
Gently guide you through each
Precious moment of Today.
I pray you have a Blessed Easter

Memories Keep Those We Love
Close To Us Forever

Although words seem to say so little,
I hope they help in some small way
to ease the sense of loss
that you’re experiencing today.

Hold fast to your memories
to all of the cherished moments
of the past,
to the blessings and the laughter,
the joys and the celebrations,
the sorrow and the tears.

They all add up to a treasure
of fond yesterdays
that you shared and spent together,
and they keep the one you loved
close to you in spirit and thought.

The special moments
and memories of your life
will never change.
They will always be in your heart
today and forever more.

Glad to hear Ryan was able to kick the flu all on his own. WTG Ryan!! It's hard to believe it's been three months already. We were talking about Twinkie this morning and then Taylor started giggling. When I asked why, she said she remembered how Ashley told her how she'd given Twinkie some "Fruity Pebbles" once and then Ryan was wondering how all that colored cereal got in her cage! Monday morning smiles, courtesy of Ashley :)

I have been following your story since October of last year and I think almost everyday about you and your family. My oldest daughter of 3 girls was diagnosed at age 4 with High Risk Pre B ALL. Taylor was diagnosed September 13, 2007. It has been a constant rollercoaster from day 1 with several road bumps along the way. Every bruise I see, every fever they get, with any coloring they get underneath their eyes I worry that it is either developing in one of my younger 2 or coming back in my oldest. I pray for that Ryan is cured forever.

Thank you for sharing your story. It gives me a little inspiration and help to stay strong to know that other mothers share in some of the same experiences as me.

Hi Robin-

I was just checking the Sharethelove.org site and saw Ashley's name a few down from Alexandria's and realized that Ashley had become an Angel. I am in shock to say the least and my heart is very heavy for your entire family. I am so sorry for your loss. I know how difficult these first few months and holidays are without your precious daughter. I wish I could take away the pain and the sadness that you, your husband, and your other children are experiencing. It has been a long 5 year journey for us since losing Alexandria, but I can offer you hope that one day your heart will learn to sing again. Please let me know if there is anything we can do for your family.

Valentines...... To Heaven

This Valentine is not of the ordinary kind,
Its still filled with love...and blessings inside;
But mine has to be sent on the wings of love...
You see its destination is the Heavens above.

Its not being sent to my parents so dear,
For they are still with me each day of the year;
Its being sent to my child...who left earth so soon,
Who's now in the Heavens with the stars and the moon.

The message is the same as your valentine,
"I love you...my sweet precious child of mine;
My love is still deeper than the ocean is blue,
And its sent with hugs and kisses...from me to you."

"I know you are with me each and every day,
You listen as I talk to you...and hear what I say;
For that is one thing that disease cannot do...
...you'll always be apart of me...and me a part of you."

"I know God did not give you the awful disease,
Thank Him for His comfort He gives me...would you please?
I dont know what I would do without His undying love...
Sent to bereaved parents from the Heavens above."

"I know you are in the best of care,
But it's so hard for us left on earth to bear;
Could you put in a request from us left behind...
For God to send the knowledge..so a cure we can find."

"So that no other family has to go through this pain,
Our lives without you will never be the same;
When I get lonely I will look to the sky at night...
And see you shining down your big bright light."

Debes Family --
You all are always on our minds. The last pictures of Taylor and Ashley together at Blue Harbor are the screen saver on the kids computer. We see them daily -- and they always make me smile. The joy on the girls faces is so plain and clear to see. They were living in the moment and that's something we plan to do as a family more often. If anything, this has made us realize you just never know what the future holds. So why put off til tomorrow what you can do today?! Ashley was a very special girl to teach us all that. I know I've said it before but... Thank you. Thank you for your beautiful daughter. We hold her close to our hearts as we do the rest of your family.

We are praying that Ryan sails through his upcoming appointment next week with flying colors! Take care and keep us posted on how you're all doing.

thinking and praying for you all~
Chris mom to Zayla www.caringbridge.org/visit/zayla
Losing a child places a mother on a road that begins a lonelier journey than ever expected—one that can never really be explained. There was a beginning, but with the death of the child, there is no middle and no end. Everything seems so unfinished. Hopes and dreams were stopped far too soon. Joy was snatched away so suddenly. A mother is left with empty arms and an empty heart. Nothing can ever be complete when a child’s life ends.

When the death of a child occurs, a mother is stopped in her tracks, and she suddenly feels inadequate and incomplete. She wears a new name. She is an “unfinished mother”, never being able to see the rest of the picture. She will never be able to watch her child mature into a young adult. She will never be able to see all the pieces fit together. The picture will always have part of the scenery missing. It is so painful to be an unfinished mother! Child loss makes everything seem so empty and incomplete.

The reality of child loss is devastating to a mother. There are overwhelming feelings of guilt, inadequacy, and most often feelings of failure. These feelings can overwhelm a mother for several months following the death of a child, and it can be quite difficult to build a support system to carry a mother through this roller coaster of emotions. Very few people will understand a mother’s explanation of feeling like she is an unfinished mother.

There will come a critical point in this journey of grief when a mother must reach deep inside her inner resources and make a conscious decision to accept herself just as she is—a mother whose heart has been touched by the pain and grief of child loss. Only then can she start to put together some of the broken pieces and begin to feel like there will be a day when she will feel more like a complete mother than an unfinished mother.
A mother is never an “unfinished mother.” A mother’s love runs far too deep to ever be called unfinished!!!~Clara Hinton

Robin & Family,
Taylor celebrated her 11th birthday yesterday. Time flies so quickly. We are always thinking of Ashley especially with Taylor's birthday. Twinkie got extra special attention because of it.

We remember how much fun the girls had at her birthday sleepover last year. Ashley was such a "night owl" and kept Taylor and the other girls up well past 2AM yet still had energy to burn the next day! Unfortunately, Taylor was on sterroids this time last year and had those Jekyl and Hyde emotions which kept me from taking very many pictures of the party. It makes me so sad now that I let those stupid drugs and the moodiness they caused keep me from documenting such a fun time in their lives. Taylor has dedicated wall in her room to an Ashley collage of pictures, etc. which makes her smile every time she enters her room. Every day seems to get a bit easier.

Many people at Woodland School ask me how you and your family are doing and they want you to know they are thinking about you too. We are holding you close to our hearts as well and praying that with each passing day the sadness makes way for something a little brighter.

Dropping by to send hugs your way.

You may know the song, I hadn't heard it in a while but when it came on today, I thought of you...

All who sail the sea of faith
Find out before too long
How quickly blue skies can grow dark
And gentle winds grow strong
Suddenly fear is like white water
Pounding on the soul
Still we sail on knowing
That our Lord is in control

Sometimes He calms the storm
With a whispered peace be still
He can settle any sea
But it doesn't mean He will
Sometimes He holds us close
And lets the wind and waves go wild
Sometimes He calms the storm
And other times He calms His child

He has a reason for each trial
That we pass through in life
And though we're shaken
We cannot be pulled apart from Christ
No matter how the driving rain beats down
On those who hold to faith
A heart of trust will always
Be a quiet peaceful place

(SCOTT KRIPPAYNE)

Wishing you calm waters today...remember you are always in His hands and close to our hearts.

Love to all,

Good Afternoon!

It is great to read that Ryan's counts were good. That is a big relief, I'm sure. Thank you, Lord. I am thinking of you today and praying for you.

A Gentle Hug

A gentle hug is wonderful,
It sends a message clear;
That someone truly cares for you
And they are ever near.

No matter how much loneliness
Pervades your inner soul,
A gentle hug is well received;
It carries such a glow.

Your inner heart is warmed again
By the light of another's touch;
A gentle hug reaches out
And means so very much.

Let another's needs be filled
By a gentle hug thus given;
Warm their heart with your love,
Share a bit of heaven.

Gentle hugs filled with care
Are encouraged day by day;
Heal your heart and another's, too,
Give a gentle hug away.

We're so grateful to hear that Ryan is doing well! And we hope that with each passing day, life gets even just a tiny bit easier. I can understand the ups and downs -- I see Taylor go through them too. A day or two of happiness then the next night she can't sleep because she's thinking about Ashley and missing her terribly.

Hi Robin,
It's Robbin. I have been thinking of you all the time. It's been a weird set of holidays for us. While Dana was at his cousin's funeral, Kelly got sick and still is. She has pneumonia now. Her counts have benn really weird. We are hoping it's due to a virus. They did pinpoint RSV, so that is probably the culpret. I read what you said about people asking about your kids. A close friend of mine says she has three here and one in heaven. She has struggled with the same thing.

I hope the New Year brings about some good things for you all. And soon the cloud will start to lift. I know things feel like they are in slow motion. Your other kids will prove to be the path that pulls you through.
God bless!

Another Year for Thee

Another year is dawning!
Dear Master, let it be,
In working or in waiting,
Another year with Thee!

Another year of leaning
Upon Thy loving breast,
Of even deeper trusting,
Of quiet, happy rest.

Another year of mercies,
Of faithfulness and grace;
Another year of gladness,
In the shining of Thy face.

Another year of progress,
Another year of praise;
Another year of proving
Thy presence "all the days."

Another year of service,
Of witness to Thy love;
Another year of training
For holier work above.

Another year is dawning!

Wishing you peace for the New Year, Robin and Family.
I pray that you can find some joy this year, even when you are not feeling overly joyful. I pray there are moments of happiness and moments of lightheartedness and moments of smiles. Mostly I pray for strength for each and every one of you to get through every day. All our love, The McDermotts.

I thought of you Robin and your family many times over this holiday season, especially when we visited CHOW for chemo and went up to the HOT unit to deliver holiday goodies....surreal to see the murals on the windows in the hall. Praying that 2008 brings only good things to your family, peace and health.

Thinking of your family, and praying that God blessed you all this Christmas, which must have been so painful without Ashley.
In reading your journal, my heart broke, as you truly have spent so much time caring for a cancer child (whether Ashley, Ryan, or both)...and now it all has ended...but your quote after today's entry was poignant, because as a cancer mom, I know how much my healthy kids missed out on when I was caring for Andrew....I pray that your time with them is extra special, there is no easy balance to all that you have had to juggle.
We continue to pray for Ryan, as the fear of relapse (or the many serious life-long side effects of treatment) is always something that keeps us on our toes.
I guess I just want to acknowledge that your family has gone through a tremendous amount of pain and hardship, and I know that there is still a lot on your plate, a lot that others might not see.
We send lots of love and prayers,
The Spragues

(((Robin))) Of course you will always have 4 children! And, as you note, what a huge adjustment your family is going through after years of treatment being the center of your lives. But I have to say, I am so impressed with how sane and healthy you sound in the midst of your grief. I know that you are crushed, but you are coping admirably for the sake of your family. Kids look to their parents for cues on how to handle life's challenges and your kids are so lucky to have you to guide them! And hooray for Ryan. My little guy is 7 years post treatment today and I can't wait for Ryan to get to the same point: to be healthy and happy and have the worry of his cancer a distant memory.

I'm saying a prayer for your family now as this New Year begins. For Ashley to know how much her family loved her. Your concern to meet her needs in every way you possibly could all those years had to give her comfort. I pray to have my kids know I love them that much- to be a parent with that type of devotion that you have for Ashley. I pray that Ryan remains free of cancer and that you find it easier to not "wait for the other shoe to fall". God bless you!
