Zack’s Story

Hey everyone!

Thanks for checking out Zack's site. I'm sure he will appreciate knowing how loved he is. You can also sign up for journal update notifications below and post messages to Zack in the guestbook.

[Saturday, September 6, 2008]:

As many of you know, Zack suffered a serious head injury last night (Sept. 5th) during a high school football scrimmage. He was airlifted to the trauma unit at Boston Medical Center, where he arrived in a coma and had emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and to remove a blood clot. He is now in a medically-induced coma in the ICU.

We are going to try to use this site to provide regular updates of his recovery. You can sign up in the "Journal" section to receive automatic notification of journal updates as we enter them.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received, and covet your continued prayers for Zack.

Dear Friends,

This is Pat (Dad) writing to give you an update on Zack.

I really can’t find words right now to explain how much I appreciate you and how much it has meant to me to experience such an outpouring of love from family and friends of Zack all around the country and even around the world.

At some point I hope to give you a longer update of how God has been ministering to me and to our family, but I simply can’t yet capture that in words. I can tell you that it has been incredibly deep, powerful and meaningful. I have definitely experienced grief and sorrow unlike I have ever known, but I also have met and experienced God in ways that I hope I never forget and can soon find time to put into words.

Today Zack’s CAT scan was unchanged. The doctors said that was neither good nor bad. What was good was that Zack continued to respond well to their means of managing the swelling in his brain. Swelling typically continues through the fourth day which is tomorrow and then tends to stop although it can go on for up to eight days. In sum, Zack is in stable but critical condition.

Not only Zack’s football team but his whole school has really come together around this situation. Today one of Zack’s dear friends, Donny, with whom he was baptized only a couple of weeks ago, requested that the school observe “Zack McLeod/> turn-back-the-compliment-day” because Zack is so well known for returning any compliment he receives with an even better compliment.

Also, at the morning assembly, Rebecca Upam, the head of school, read a letter that I will post later—a letter that I wrote yesterday morning on Zack’s birthday that is my best attempt to capture how I think Zack would want his classmates to respond.

Again, I am overwhelmed by your gracious response to Zack’s accident as well as overwhelmed at how many lives have been touched and blessed by him.

He truly is something very special.

Hold Fast,

Pat

Latest Journal Update

A Journal Entry from Zach

Dear Friends,

Zach and I used to talk a lot about what he was learning in his walk with God.  Since I miss that, I asked if he wanted to do the St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises with our family daily for the next six months, and he was excited to be a part.  Each day he reads the assigned Scripture and some days he writes back with answers to the questions posed.  I asked him if I could post one of his answers since many of you ask how he is doing. His answer shows the state of his soul.

Week 3 Day 3-Read Ps 63:1-8 A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

What do you thirst for?  How do you experience God’s steadfast love?

Zach wrote, “I thirst for God because he has given me life and joy.  I will keep on worshiping him as long as I live.”

Zach’s soul is well. He is the most happy, joyful person I know despite his severe disabilities.  I learn so much from him about what matters most in life.

Thanks for your continued prayers for Zach and our family.  When I asked Zach what he wants us to pray for him this year, he wrote, “I would love for you to pray for me to remain healthy and happy.”  Let’s continue to pray for him for these things.

With gratitude,

Tammy

It is so good to connect again with Zack's updates. I have missed him these past months, but thank God he is doing well and his passion for his Creator remains strong and contagious. Please let Zack know I remain thankful to our Lord he gave me the opportunity to meet him during my visit to Boston back in 2010. I had learned about him through his mom at Park Street Church back in 2008 when I lived in Boston, after that I moved to South Carolina.
Tammy and Pat, thank you for your steadfastness and your encouragement to us all.
Zack, I love you and will continue praying for you --for your health and for your joy-- and for your mom and dad and siblings. May the Lord bless you all in this new year 2015.

So nice to hear from Zach. I keep a framed note that he wrote us after South Africa - on a bookshelf in our family room. It's a beautiful reminder to me of his beautiful soul and the kinds of thoughts I know still go on his head. Have been thinking of him a lot as Jonah talks about him in the speech contest he's in at present. He competes again on the 31st of this month - wants to invite you to come if he moves on....We love you all.
