Our Little Samson
William had a visit with his neurosurgeon today (aka the man who saved his life) and it went well. Now, Dr. Kanev doesn't like to take credit and there were so many fine people to get Willie to this point, but Dr. Kanev stood in the breach when all seemed lost.
We heard the statistics again. Willie is a walking and (sometimes) talking miracle. His chances of survival back on Sept. 30? Less than half. His chances of walking and (sometimes) talking again? Infinitely less than that.
But here we are nearly seven months in and William continues to defy expectations, maybe even reason.
But he does need a haircut. The last time he was shorn was the day he fell. As you can imagine, there's quite a mop up there now.
How do you clip a boy that hated clippers to begin with and really isn't crazy about them with a 12-inch horseshoe-shaped scar on his scalp now?
Well, you punt. Now, I like scars. Think they add character. Kim? She likes scars on me, apparently, but isn't fond of them on her youngest pride and joy.
And Willie always has been a joy. There are and have been challenges, but how can you not love such a happy soul? As for pride, he could become president and it wouldn't match my amazement as he clears hurdle after hurdle. The pro sports Halls of Fame would have tens of thousands of members if players had half the determination William demonstrates daily.
Dr. Kanev -- a Hall of Famer in his own right (you can look it up) -- wishes he had made William's scar a little tighter, gone for his own home run and stretched the skin so it wouldn't show as significantly. We discussed this back in January and we all agreed to get the bone back in William's skull and not worry about the cosmetics. Well, now it's time for the cosmetics.
William will go back in at a time to be determined to get his scar closed up to a degree it may be far less noticeable. And that may be the last time we see Dr. Kanev. But we bet he hits for the cycle on this one.
