A Happy Return
And so, 93 days after tumbling out a third-floor window on to concrete below, William Sterling Davis awoke to find himself transformed into … his old self.
OK, maybe an homage to The Metamorphosis is a bit of a stretch, but Willie did have a big day Monday back at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
The three pieces of skull nestled in his abdomen were removed, bolted together, then put back in his skull. Both incisions were then laced (and stapled) up, and just like that, our hard-headed boy has a hard head again.
There’s a lot more that goes into everything that occurred, but the important part is his doctors were pleased, the risk of potential complications is lower than we could rightfully hope for and Willie is in one piece after all this time.
He’ll recover for a few days at CCMC before heading back to The Hospital for Special Care for an unspecified amount of time.
Best guess is he will be home within two weeks of today.
There are years of physical, speech and occupational therapy ahead of him, and from this point forward I don’t think we’ll ever be able to differentiate what was needed because he is autistic and what was necessitated by his traumatic brain injury.
Is that an existential question? I’m too tired to think about it.
We will write more, and soon, but that will come after some sleep, and our 16th anniversary tomorrow.
