My Story

Welcome to the "Walk to Inspire" website. Created for a very special event, a fathers walk to inspire his sons fight against cancer, beginning Saturday, March 12, 2011. The "Walk To Inspire" will travel from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to M D Anderson in Houston, Texas.  To walk along or offer logistical support, e-mail us at walktoinspire@gmail.com. Visit every day to see where the "Walk" is that day.

On March 10, 2010, my son, Will Steele,  at the tender age of 33, was diagnosed with CANCER. We were told that he had DSRCT. The doctors told him there is no cure that will save his life. Through intense chemotherapy and surgery they can, at best, prolong his life for 2-5 years. Of course, we were devastated. For months I walked around in a daze. I thought of his funeral and what he would look like in a coffin. I desperately wanted to do something. Will did not want to do Chemotherapy in the beginning saying why go through that if he was going to die anyway. I told him that he needed to do anything possible to prolong  his life for the sake of his wife, Kerri and most of all for his three children Page, Emma and Liam, who were six, four, and two years old at the time. If he could prolong his life five or six years his son would be able to have memories of his father. My son relented and to date has gone through 10 rounds of grueling chemotherapy.
On March 31st of 2011 he will undergo an extreme surgery to remove as much of the remaining CANCER as possible. He told me while I was trying to convince him to do the treatments that I did not realize how difficult this was going to be and that I was not the one who was going to be going through this. I told him that I would take chemotherapy with him but I did not think the medical community would let me. I told him that I would try to find something very difficult to do in support for him. I decided that something would be to walk to M D Anderson in Houston, where his surgery is scheduled, from Baton Rouge, where I live.

I started out with one purpose, to show my son how much I love and want to support him. For the first time in almost a year I found hope.  After a great amount of time and consideration I have finalized  the purpose for my walk -- first,  show my son how much I understand his pain and secondly, to not wish I could do something, but, rather do something. So on March 12th, 2011, I will leave Baton Rouge on my walk to Houston. Anyone who would like to join me in the walk or some sort of logistical support, you would be most welcome.
