Obituary of Jerry Wayne Erwin, III

Jerry Wayne “Trey” Erwin, III, of Collierville, TN passed away on July 5, 2012, just a few weeks shy of his 16th birthday. Trey attended Collierville High School where he had completed his Sophomore year and played Receiver on the Collierville Dragon Football Team. He started playing football at the age of 5. He was a very active member of Germantown Baptist Church, serving in the Germantown Student Ministry and Under Authority Youth Choir. He served in Children’s Worship and went on many mission trips. Trey was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on March 6th and his first remarks were - “I’ll be okay”, “I’ll either be healthy here, or healthy in Heaven”. Since Trey was diagnosed, God gave him a platform for the last four months of his life to declare that Jesus is in control and that he is going to be okay. That peace spread throughout the nation via a campaign on Twitter labeled #prayfortrey. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to all of the Collierville Community for all of their support, as well as the thousands more from around the Nation. Trey is survived by his parents, Jerry “Jay” Erwin Jr., and Lisa C. Erwin; his brother, Collin Erwin; his grandmothers, Cecelia Erwin and Lena E. Hutcherson; uncle, Terry Erwin; aunts, Judy Riley and Donna Thorne (Bill); many other extended family members; and a “Host of Dragons”. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Leonard M. Hutcherson, Jerry W. Erwin, Sr.; his great-grandmother, Hazel Caldwell “Lil Grandma”; and his uncle, Barry Erwin. A celebration of Trey’s life will be held at Germantown Baptist Church on Saturday, July 7th at 2 p.m., and the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family asks that any memorial contributions be made in Trey’s name to Germantown Baptist Church Student Ministry, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, West Clinic, or the Friends of Trey Erwin account at BankTennessee.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:6, 7 NIV)
