Tom Schaafsma's Journal
Firday Night/Sat Early AM:
Written Oct 13, 2012 5:00amAs most of you have heard, Tom was in a very serious accident in the woods behind our house this afternoon. He and Ryan were attempting to take a tree down and the tractor on which Tom was sitting on flipped up and fell back on him, pinning his body under the tractor. Ryan had to run back to the house and get his truck, then wench the tractor off his unconscious body. Ryan then preformed CPR until the medics got there. They were able to put him on life support and airlift him to Harborview Trauma Center in Seattle.
Ryan and I drove over as soon as we could and met the rest of our family and friends to await news from the doctors.
As of this evening (morning?) Tom continues to be in critical condition, but is stable. He is on life support, but can breathe weakly on his own. He has 2 tubes in his chest to take out fluid from partially collapsed lungs and has a number of broken ribs ( from the crush as well as CPR). He does not seem to have any spinal cord injuries. He is mildly sedated now and they are letting him rest tonight. He does not appear to have any internal bleeds anywhere so that is good news. However, Tom has responded very little to stimulation and that is our greater concern as he was without oxygen for 10+ minutes. He was heavily sedated for some hours, so we are just watching him and praying.
One of us will try to email out updates as to Tom's status and keep you aware of things. It would be best for you NOT to call the hospital as it's a bit overwhelming right now but hopefully we can keep you appraised of things as they happen by email. It's late and I'm not sure I got all the email addresses listed, so forward on updates as needed.
God is a great God, and understands all this. He is in charge of all things, and we attempt to rest in that as best we can. Please pray for Tom to wake up and also for Ryan as he was especially traumatized today.
