Tighe went into the hospital at about 10 PM on Saturday, October 24th after having severe stomach pain and a small seizure. After waiting in the hospital for awhile with friends Tighe was taken back for surgery at about 2:30 AM. During this time Chris and Cathy got on a plane headed straight for California. The surgery lasted about four hours and during that time her spleen was removed and they found about a liter of blood in her stomach. They could not find the root of the internal bleeding and so coming out of surgery she was continuing to have bleeding.
Here is a little recap from one of dad's best friends and business partner, Ray Schulmeyer: Tighe, who is a senior at Cal - Berkley had a seizure at school. It appeared that she was stable and he was going to fly out to California to make sure everything checked out ok - she had never had a seizure before. As it turned out, things were much worse than was originally thought. From what I know at this point it appears that Tighe's suffered a ruptured spleen and possibly an aortic aneurysm. She has gone through multiple surgeries in the past few days. For a long time her blood refused to clot and she was exhausting the local blood supply. At one point she went into cardiac arrest but they were able to bring her back. She has suffered multiple organ failure and is on dialysis and a respirator. Cathy and Chris flew out to California on the first flight Sunday morning. They have pretty much been by her side since then. At this point she appears to be doing slightly better.
I wanted to share this wonderful article that Ron Kroichick wrote in The San Francisco Chronicle today about Tighe's ordeal. Among all of the chaos and saddness that has hit the lacrosse community this week with the death of Yeardley Love I hope this article brings you hope and strength. Yeardley Love and her family are in our constant thoughts and prayers, especially today as they celebrate her short life. Here is the article:
