Susan Johnson's Journal
onward and upward
Written Jan 8, 2014 6:04pm by Jane MealeyThis is just a quick update on Sue. She continues to amaze us all with her spirit and determination. She scoots around on her prosthetic legs with ease. We have now had our second appointment with Advanced Arms Dynamic and they are confident they can help Sue get some hands that work for her. We are lucky to have a company like that here in Minnesota. There was an article in People Magazine recently about a chef who lost his hand and now is back to work with his new " bionic" hand that came from Arm Dynamics. When we had our appointment the therapist told us they are now dealing with 5 quad amputees! It made us all sad to think of 5 people and their families going down that long long road too! Sue has volunteered to talk to anyone of these people if wanted. We all think she would be a great motivational speaker. Lastly, Sue is going to have surgery next week for some scar revision to her face and lip. I think that will be a step in the healing process to see her face more like it used to be. This will be an outpatient surgery. After that Sue will undergo a more extensive surgery to correct her nasal passage that was destroyed by the DIC. They will be taking cartiledge from her ear to rebuild her nose. The expected outcome will be that she will be able to breath so much better. We were teasing that she would have a Michael Jackson prosthetic nose! Gotta have a few laughs when you are going through this ! We are all glad that 2013 is behind us. We have faith renewed that things are only going to get better and we cling to that on a daily basis! Thanks again to everyone for your love and support! Happy New Year to you all! Love, Jane
One more thing
Written Oct 27, 2013 8:22am by Jane MealeyMy family would like to thank everyone at Town and Country for their support of Sue and in their generosity in providing the most beautiful ,venue for Sue's benefit. Throughout this whole ordeal Sue has said constantly how much she loved her job and her co-workers. Where as sometimes JD and I wished we had more days off from our job Sue never complained about working. She looked forward to going and helping out with big events. I think that says alot about a company. Also , want to thank the members of Town and Country who have also extended their well wishes and contributions to Sue. It has meant the world to her. Thank you all again! Love, Jane .
A smashing success
Written Oct 25, 2013 10:05pm by Jane MealeySue's benefit exceeded all our expectations. We believe at least 400 + people attended the event. It was humbling for Sue to see the huge room full of family and friends who came to show their love and support. The "Sue's Crew" team that worked so hard to put this event together did a fantastic job and the MC John Hines (our old neighbor) was hilarious! It was touching for Sue to have her benefit attended by many of the staff members from the Acute Rehab Center where she had spent 3 months. It was clear that Dr. Crowe, the nurses and the therapists truly thought of her as a unique and special patient by their presence. Also in attendance where our aunts, uncles and cousins from South Dakota. Our cousin Tom made the trip from Wyoming. Sue herself looked beautiful. Dressed to the nines in an outfit given to her by her friends Barb and Tom. When you looked around the room you couldn't help but think of how many wonderful people there are in the world. People who unselfishly have given Sue the gift of their time, the gift of their love and their generousity through donations to her fund. I have to also say thank you to all of the people who donated sooo many fabulous gifts to the silent auction. Tables and tables full of unique and wonderful gifts! Thank you all again for the support both in your presence and in spirit!.
Love to you all, Jane
