Paxton Andrews's Journal
Written May 13, 2012 11:52am by Kelsey AndrewsPaxton will begin chemotherapy this afternoon. He will be receiving two drugs that are used to treat a few different types of cancer as they are still trying to figure out exactly what he has. Due to the chemo his ability to fight off infection will drop dramatically.
John and Danna have been advised to stop all visitation until further notice - as even the smallest cold, or exposure to colds or other illnesses can be detrimental to Paxton's well being.
They continue to appreciate the tremendous amount of support given thus far. Please keep Paxton in your thoughts and prayers!!!

How to help
Written May 12, 2012 11:33pm by Amy SiodlarzSo many have asked how to best help Danna, John and Paxton.Once Paxton's course of care becomes more clear, they will be better able to determine specific needs. For now, in lieu of flowers, food, gift cards please consider a donation to the following website. The site is very secure. It is up and running due to Meg Doering's efforts and is ready to accept donations. It works much like a savings account and Danna and John will be able to use the account for anything they need now and into the months ahead.Danna and John and so thankful for your kind words, cards, guestbook posts. They offer a moment of comfort during long, grueling days at the hospital. Danna and John know there is an army of angels here on earth to support and comfort them.Amy
Written May 12, 2012 9:15pm by Kelsey AndrewsPaxton has been an amazing fighter this week. The doctors continue to be impressed with his strength and with how well he is handling everything. Since Tuesday, he has undergone multiple procedures including two biopsies, a bone scan, a bone marrow draw, and multiple CT scans.
After the first CT scans done on Tuesday in the ER, the doctors found masses behind his eyes, near the base of his skull, and a small mass in his liver. As a result, on Wednesday Paxton had a liver biopsy to try to determine what the masses were in the least invasive way. The doctors were leaning toward a diagnosis, but this biopsy proved inconclusive and the doctors worked tirelessly to determine the best course of action in a way that would be as easy as possible on Paxton.
On Thursday, Paxton had a bone scan done to see if the tumors had spread to his bones. John and Danna received great news that the tumors hadn't moved to his ribs. This also confirmed that the tumors were predominantly located only in his head.
Friday was a big day for John, Danna, and Paxton. Paxton underwent multiple procedures- a biopsy to take a sample of the tumor from behind his right eye, a bone marrow draw, an MRI, and a port was inserted in his chest to be able to administer chemotherapy and medication so that they wouldn't have to continuously poke him. These procedures lasted about 10 hours. Paxton handled everything like a champ, with excellent vitals! Late Friday night, they were given a preliminary diagnosis of AML, which is a type of leukemia. The doctors discussed some treatment options, but were still waiting for final confirmation from the biopsy before beginning treatment. These procedures certainly took their toll on Paxton, but he remained strong with excellent vitals throughout the night and found comfort in being held by mom or dad. The doctors have mentioned their awe of Paxton's ability to endure multiple times.
After a rough night of recovery, John and Danna were in good spirits on Saturday. A family member spent the morning holding Paxton, with minimal visitors so that John and Danna could get some rest. They were able to sleep for a few hours and Paxton's oxygen levels and heart rate were very strong all day. Friday's biopsy coupled with the growing tumors have caused significant swelling to Paxton's eyes. He underwent another CT scan Saturday morning to ensure there was no clotting, and the results showed that there was not. This was another victory for Paxton! Paxton was also able to eat and enjoyed a meal for the first time in a few days (another victory)!
Paxton has proven over and over again how strong he is. While the procedures are not easy on him, he accepts each with grace and ease, and is comfortable being held after each one. He continues to latch onto and stare at whomever is holding him and has taken some time this week to check himself out in his mirror, and has given a few smiles to mom and dad throughout the week.
The tumors behind his eyes continue to grow rapidly and are causing pressure and swelling on his eyes. The doctors are eager to begin treatment but are still working to determine a final diagnosis. Pathologists and the oncology team are working hard to determine what exact type of cancer Paxton has. Although John and Danna continue to wait, the doctors will be proceeding with treatment to shrink the tumors. Paxton has started on steroids to reduce swelling in his eyes and the Doctors are working on a treatment plan even though final results are not back yet. The doctors anticipate receiving final results sometime in the near future as there are multiple pathologists reviewing his tests. Treatment is expected to begin sometime in the next 24 hours based on the impact that the steroids have.
The family will continue to post updates on Paxton's progress and results. Please know that Paxton truly is a peaceful warrior and is battling this in full force. John, Danna, and extended family and friends are very proud of Paxton.
As things continue to move forward, please continue to send thoughts and prayers. While there are good and bad moments of each day, John and Danna welcome visitors and ask for patience and understanding should you not be able to see the family on any given day. John and Danna are overwhelmed with the amount of love and support they've received thus far and are tremendously appreciative of your outreach and generous gifts. A glass jar has been set up in Paxton's room for visitors, friends, and family to leave a message for John and Danna to read throughout this process. If you are not able to visit, please mail your message to Paxton's room, the address is located in the 'my story' section.
