Patrick’s Story

March 12, 2014

Welcome to the Burke's CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.

On March 12th Patrick was diagnosed with a treatable form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL).  Treatment plans are undetermined and pending more medical tests.

We are unsure of work plans and appreciate the unwavering support of our large family in Boston, New York and around the globe.  We are very appreciative of our friends in the South Burlington School District, our home town of Jericho, and the wider VT education and youth hockey community.

Here is the message we sent out to the South Burlington Community:

Dear SBHS Community Members,

As many of you know, I am most comfortable leading the charge for the good of others – our school, our kids, education in VT and certainly my family.  As life would have it, I have been called upon to focus more on myself.  I recently received the diagnosis that I have cancer and while I have confidence in my treatment team, I know that this is going to require me to spend considerable time away from school and related activities.  Just how much time away is for the moment unclear as they determine the best course of treatment.

I am very pleased to be able to say that between our leadership teams here at the high school and with support from our district administration I am confident that the school year will progress in good stead.  I ask for your support of those teams as they take on extra work.  As for me, I want you to know I am surrounded by my loving family and capable medical hands and ask only for your healing thoughts and perhaps some extra love for those immediately around you.  I will be sure that word gets out about my progress as time goes on.

Latest Journal Update

Back to school!

As you know last spring I underwent treatment for cancer. With my cancer in remission and chemotherapy complete I am excited to be returning to school and look forward to an exciting year.

The love and support I felt during my treatment was nothing short of phenomenal.  I will never be able to fully express my gratitude to our family and friends.

My doctors will continue to monitor my health via regular CAT/PT scans and at this time "no news is good news."  This site has been a helpful way to update folks about my treatment and I will continue to do so should anything related to my health situation change.

Thank you again for your prayers, kindness, and words of encouragement.
