Happy New Year (early)! We are wishing you a year filled with happiness and good health in 2009. We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. We are looking forward to 2009 and ready to put 2008 behind us.

Christmas was a blast for Owen. We spent Christmas Eve with the Christenson side of the Family and Christmas day with the Andrychowicz’s. Owen was on a roll both days. He loved the wrapping paper, bows and tissue paper. He didn’t get too excited over the new wardrobe but the boxes they came in were really fun to play with. Overall, Christmas was very relaxing and Owen did an amazing job going with the flow.

Over the break Owen has seen a few doctors for follow-up visits. The first doc he saw was the eye doctor. Nothing has changed since this summer. Owen might need glasses because his left eye takes a little longer to focus. The doc told us he might grow out of it so Owen will see him again next October unless we see changes. This is better news than what we received from the nephrologists (kidney doc).

Today we headed to the U of M for a follow-up with the nephrologists. The ultrasound indicated that Owens’s right kidney has not grown since May and his left kidney is right on track with his age. Owen also had a urine culture and routine blood work taken. This evening we received the results. Owen has developed metabolic acidosis. This can be very serious if it is not treated. The nephrologist believes the cause is from Topamax (seizure med). The topamax will either need to be discontinued or we will need to add another medication to level out the acid in Owen’s blood. We are now waiting to hear back from the neurologist. We are hoping we can get rid of topamax…its really not a friendly drug.

Owen’s next adventure is scheduled on January 12th. He will be having his adenoids removed along with some tissue in his throat. We are hoping that the news today won’t delay the surgery. However, we want Owen to be healthy before surgery.

We are looking forward to the best year ever with our sweet Owen. He continues to brighten every day with his giggles and smiles. He sure is special!

Thank you for a year of support and blessings,

Matt, Michelle and Smiley Pants!
