Hospital trip with Nathan

Well life around the Norman household is anything but boring! Most of you that follow us on Facebook know that July 2nd, which happened to be Matthew's 9th birthday, started with us just celebrating Matthew and how much we love him. But by early afternoon celebration was quickly traded for hospitals and doctors. Matthew's allergies had gone into a sinus infection and Nathan spiked a fever about 1 on Wednesday. My mom, Lisa, watched Sarah and Tabby while Bobby got off to take Matt to the dr and I took Nathan to the hospital. To make a long story short - 103 fever, 2 ER visits, great nurses and doctors, being admitted to pediatrics late Wednesday evening. Not quite sure what happened whether Nathan had a bacterial infection somewhere or just a viral infection or combination of the two. They gave 2 rounds of IV antibiotics even though all the cultures and tests came back fine. Since Nathan is on active chemo anytime fever goes over 101 you have to assume infection and treat. Duke did not want our local hospital, Lynchburg General Hospital, to release him until temperature was completely normal and more input that output (in other words he could keep his food in). After being in the hospital since Wednesday, Nathan is doing great - fever is gone and now eating and drinking again.

He has had soooooo many people praying. And God answered those prayers. God also works through the wonderful nurses, doctors and medicine to bring healing to our sweet boy. We have realized through this journey that Nathan being sick and battling cancer does cannot stop his joy, his faith, his trust in Jesus, his love of life. God has and will continue to touch that little boy's life in ways we can only imagine. There are so many times that Nathan has shared with us ways that God had just opened his eyes to things we cannot even imagine. I truly believe that the angels he sees are God's way of bringing comfort and peace to Nathan.

We have also realized through this journey for the past 5 1/2 years of Nathan's battle with cancer that one day the cancer could take his life or a secondary infection could and so we need to make the most of each day and each moment. He is still not a victim of cancer, he loves life and it loves him. We enjoy life. We try to praise the Lord daily in spite of our circumstances. If you have children please enjoy them, love on them, spend time with them. Life is so precious. Each day is a gift of God. We have so many friends who have lost their children to cancer who would love to have just one more day, one more hug, one more moment. Don't take your children for granted.

"And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world." (1 Peter 1:5-7 NLT) Our faith rests in the hope and saving grace of Jesus! We pray for Nathan to be healed and for God's glory to be seen in his life. We are so thankful for his merciful hand and for Nathan doing better today. We are being released from the hospital later today.

Please pray for other children battling Nathan Thomas, MC, Caroline, Cody, Cullen, Kaydon, Ezra, Ethan, and so many other friends. Keep my Aunt Brenda's family in your prayers as she went home to be with Jesus this week. Also pray for my Nana who is in hospice care and my mom, Lisa, who is have many health complications.

I sure hope Matthew's sinus infection is gone. I sure hope he feels better.
I'm happy that Nathan is home by now and enjoying himself. I'm sending LOTS of hugs and prayers to adorable Nathan. I'm also sending prayers to those you asked for.
With loving thoughts,

Your family continues to be a blessing to us with how you just lean on Christ for each and every day. God is faithful and I stand amazed that when I first started following you guys They didn't think that Nathan would make it to Christmas (has it really been three years??)...but the Lord in His tender mercy has allowed Nathan to continue to bless and encourage us AND be an example as to how to go thru trials!! What a witness you all are for the Lord!!! We continue to keep you uplifted in our prayers and also would love an update on how Bobby is feeling now. May the Lord continue to strengthen Nathan and bless all of you! We love your family!
