Nathan Charles Norman's Journal
Written Jan 21, 2009 9:41amIt is Jan 21st, 2009, Nathan came out of surgery yesterday. The doctors said Nathan's tumor appears to be a glioma or astrocytoma. He said the tumor was on the surface of the cerebellum right up against the brain stem. Dr. Grant was very aggressive in removing the tumor and "pushed upto the edge" of critical points. He removed all of the tumor that he saw but is uncertain if any remains in the brain stem grooves. They did a CT last night and will do a MRI tomorrow. Dr. Grant believes the tumor was a low grade (1 or 2) but we will not know definitely until Pathology gets the results in 5 - 7 days. We still are uncertain about chemo. If it comes back a grade 3 or 4 we will have to do chemo. If it is a grade 1 or 2 like he hopes we are going to have to bring Nathan in 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, etc. If they ever note a change or the tumor beginning to regrow we have to start chemo. We had a rough night last night. Nathan is having a little trouble breathing. They thought he might have to have a ventilator put back in but so far they have not had to do that. He has been vomiting a lot. They are still keeping him pretty sedated. We do not know about permanent or short term damage that may have happened yet. He may have to have some therapy, we will know over the next several days. His blood work is not coming back how they would like it, he has metabolic acidosis, which they hope is coming from pain. Thank you for all the prayers and support, please continue.

Written Jan 19, 2009 1:41pmWe are leaving today for Duke to try and miss the winter storm. I talked to Dr. Grant today, he may move the surgery up by and hour or two. We will not know until the last minute. We want to thank everyone for their prayers, support, help with the kids (and dog), help coping, our notebook, all of the generous donations that have been given, and everything that has been done for our family. We love and appreciate you all.
