Mikel had just one treatment left in his 40 week chemo protocol and I was actually starting to believe that he was going to get to the end without any more set backs.
Halloween morning Mikel woke with a slight headcold and felt kind of lousy but he didn't have a temperature. . . until noon when school called. Anything over 100.5 he needs to go to the hospital asap and he had risen from 100 to 102 within the hour.  Eric rushed him to Roger Maris and his temp continued to rise to 106 within a few hours. They started running cultures and put him on antibiotics.  By Saturday afternoon they believed  the problem to be a blood infection originating from his chemo port. Apparently it is not uncommon for a person to go through 2 or 3 ports due to infection after this many treatments.  Today he had his port removed and will get fluids and meds through an IV in his hand until his blood cultures come back clean for 2 days. He is still sleeping from his surgery but I am guessing he is not going to be too thrilled having an IV in his hand for 3 or 4 days. He will most likely be at Sanford most of the week.
