MaryAnn’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. It has been created to keep friends and family updated about the serious accident MaryAnn was involved in on 12/23/06. The response and offers of help and support have been overwhelming such that it has been difficult for me to respond to the numerous phone calls, emails, and home visits.

Accident details - On 12/23/06 at about 3:30p, a drunk driver in a pickup truck heading east on Sandhill just east of 280 ran her over while she was cycling in the bike lane and dragged her resulting in injuries to her face, jaw, air pipe, foot (de-soled), multiple spinal fractures, rib fractures, skin lacerations/burns, and pelvis. The evening of the accident, 10 surgeons (ENT, plastic surgeons, oral surgeon, trauma, and orthopedic surgeons) performed 9 hours of surgery that ended at 6AM on Sunday. Because her larynx was damaged and leaking air, she had a tracheotomy and required assistance breathing. Considering the extent of the injuries, it's amazing that she is in one piece; however, she is improving though she did require 3 additional surgeries one month after the accident.

The driver was very intoxicated and attempted to flee the scene, but other cyclists and drivers who witnessed the accident prevented him. He was in jail overnight and released the following day. The arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday the 26th at 1:30PM at the Court House in Redwood City (400 County Center). 15+ friends/teammates/cyclists showed up, but the arraignment was postponed to January 30th where 30+ supporters came and then again postponed to February 22nd.

It has been hard to keep track of who to notify, so please forward to anyone you think would like to know. Thanks for all your support and best wishes for MaryAnn's recovery.
