Early on the morning of October 2 at 4:49 am the local Malibu police department responded to an accident on the Pacific Coast Highway between a bicyclist and a delivery truck. Maija was the cyclist leaving early in the morning as she always does on her way to work. The driver of the truck remained on the scene and emergency medical personnel evacuated Maija to the trauma center at Ronald Reagan Medical Center on the campus of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA ).The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
She underwent surgery at approximately 7:30 am that lasted over 5 hours to initially address the most serious issues. She had extensive injuries consisting of numerous fractures including her left leg, right arm, sternum, clavicle, ribs, pelvis, mandible (jawbone) and orbital socket around her left eye and a small fracture at the base of her skull, punctured lung and numerous abrasions. Fortunately there were no brain or spinal injuries as she was wearing her helmet. The surgeons and physicians are confident she will recover from her injuries but there is a long journey ahead with more surgeries and extensive rehabilitation.
Because there is a series of additional surgeries required and she remains in the Intensive Care Unit, visitation is not encouraged until she can be moved from the ICU to a regular room. Check back here in the Journal entries for when that will be and all the information you need to plan a visit to see Maija will be supplied.
