2013 Mayo Checkup

July 31, 2013 Update - Today was my checkup at Mayo Clinic. I have seen Dr. Pulido every year since we found the cancer in January of 2006 - not this year. He has so many patients - new patients that require the surgery - and he is doing more reseach on this form of cancer so has given his longer-term patients to one of his associates. My new Dr. is Dr. Wendy Smith. I thought she was very good - thorough and explained the situations very well. Started the day at 7am with a full CT scan and then the blood work. There were five more appointments from 11am to when I met with Dr. Smith at 3pm. Everything went very well. The CT scan continues to monitor the spot in the lung but it has been pretty stable for the past few years so not a major concern at this time - still will continue to watch it closely. The tumor in the eye has continued to shrink and is now down to about 2.7mm which is very good. I have a cataract in my bad left eye and that is limiting some of the checkup and monitoring due to not being able to see around it to check the health of the eye. Dr Smith will confer with Dr Pulido and we may need to remove the cataract this year. Everything is very good at this time - seven years down, five to go. It is always a long hard day and very stressful on the eyes but so worth it when there is such a good report, again. Thanks to everyone who have been so thoughtful and offering support during this past year. Couldn't do this without my special friends and family. Thanks so much for your thoughts - Take Care.

January 25, 2013 Update- Today is the 7th anniversary of my finding out that I had eye cancer - five more years to the 12 year cancer-free milestone! Good news is that all tests and things we are watching as indicators of problems have been negative. The pressure in the bad left eye is still being addressed but is under control so I feel very comfortable that we are on a good path to that 12 year anniversary. I still celebrate this day as a special day when Dr Prasad found the problem at a routine eye exam and caught it early enought that the treatment has worked and saved my life. I stopped into her office today and left her a flower and thank you card as I have on each anniversary. I had lunch with Lia and a good friend of ours and we also plan to celebrate with a night out tonight as well. Again, thanks to my family, special friends, the doctors, and everyone who continues to provide support for me - Take Care.

July 20, 2012 Update - My checkup at Mayo Clinic was today. I was supposed to be here in April but Dr. Pulido has so many patients that it took until today to get in to see him. It has been a few months over six years since the surgery and the visits will be once a year as long as everything goes well. The schedule for the day was a lot better than in the recent past with not as much time between tests. I was early for the blood tests and to the CT scan. This visit I had a full CT scan, which is the first such scan as compared to PETT scans in the past. It is normally a two hour process that was scheduled at 11am but I actually started before 10am and finished shortly after 11am. We had a bite to eat and then waited for the ultrsound of the left eye. That is the more uncomfortable test of the day but also went well. I got in to see Dr. Pulido late in the afternoon. He reviewed all of the tests and they all look good. They want to compare the lung pictures of the past couple of years to make sure the little items found are okay and not a concern - he will let me know on Monday as they couldn't pull up the one from 2009 - should be okay. I do have a slight blur spot in my good right eye and noted that to him just as he was examining the eye and he could see the cause inside the eyeball. I can't remember what he called the condition but it relates to blood pressure so will be taking some eyedrops to control it. Also, the pressure in the left eye is quite high so I will be meeting with Dr. Max Johnson in Fargo in a couple of weeks to work on that as well to find out why that is happening. So, overall, a very good report again. Halfway to the 12 year cancer free date so will be coming back down to Mayo next July and the next 6 years. Thanks to everyone who have been so thoughtful and offering support during this past year and the six years to date. Couldn't do this without my family and special friends. Thanks so much for your thoughts - Take Care.
