Katie Verdecchia's Journal
Fox News Channel 12 Story tonight
Written Nov 23, 2011 8:16pmFox News Channel 12 will be doing a follow up story on Katie between 10:10 and 11:00. Set your DVRs, but you know I will post the link tomorrow too!
Written Nov 22, 2011 12:42pmReflecting back on Katie’s biggest milestone since surgery, the biggest one would be today! She is officially one year seizure free! Thanks to Dr Mathern and UCLA surgical team/hospital team as well as the Legacy System here in the Northwest. .
It has just amazed us how far she has come since a year ago.
Katie is literally thriving! In addition to be seizure Free- Katie is med Free. She no longer has constipation and she is gaining weight. Not alot- but a decent amount. She eats, feeds herself, and makes choices about what she wants to eat or drink. She has NOT been in the hospital ONCE since leaving the Hospital last December. No seizures or medications exacerbating her illnesses or asthma.
She has improved on so much she can ‘run’, and go up and down stairs on her own. She can communicate- with pictures, and she is interacting with us and other people! Having other kids around in preschool and great Therapy Centers and sessions has really helped too.
Katie is on a decent schedule that includes potty training or potty eliminating. She also occasionally brings us her potty card and has peed in the toilet a few times. We are not pushing this and letting it go where it will. To us- she is way ahead of schedule! She also lets us brush her teeth morning and night – something unheard of before surgery that I fought her tooth and nail. She steps up on her step stool and I turn on the water- give her the Flovent and brush her teeth.
She is learning, colors and ABCs, and can pick Elmo and Cookie Monster out of other sesame characters when asked. (she still loves Yo Gabba Gabba and Ni-hao-but Elmo is taking over. Sesame street sure knows what kids like!) She loves her IPAD which is why we are glad to be working on an Augg Comm device. She has started Augmentative Communication to learn to communicate with her words through a speech/voice specific box besides her IPAD. Her Augg comm says she is farther along that she gave her credit for- and she plans on being prepared for Katie's capabilities at the next session the first week in December.
I am racking my brain to find other stuff, but truly- she is hitting the classic toddler stage. She is well behaved- but does get spaghetti legs. She is putting things in the toilet and trying to flush it. She is opening drawers and taking things out of them or off the counter. Speaking of- she can open doors! She can take off her right show and sock. I am so sure there is more that I am missing!
So we have a lot to be grateful for this thanks giving. Please- if you leave a message- leave an email or email me separately at firstname.lastname@example.org, so I can say Thanks! Thanks for all your support through this past year! Some have been silent, some encouraging on phone and on emails. Some were able to come in person. Thanks for the donations and love and prayers, wishes, and candles. Thanks. You were what truly got us through this year- that a spunky little girl who does not let disability slow her down!
One last time- trying to add link
