My name is Katie Ortega. I am 18 years old and on June 8th, 2012, I was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. When I first found out, it was hard for me to grasp that I would not be living a normal teenage life, but then I remembered that God does not give us something we can not handle. Those of you who know me well, know that i'm a fighter and i will win this battle. I have cancer, cancer does not have me. I have faith in God and I know he has a great plan for me at the end of this crazy journey. I thank God for everyone in my life. And thank you to All of you who have been keeping me in your prayers. God bless!
Katie is back to school and doing well at adjusting. It is very hard for her to sit in a room full of coughing and sneezing 17 yr olds. But she is doing the best she can to hang in there. She has been sick twice now since she went back to school.
Katie is still tired and weak and really doesn't want to do much away from home, which is ok with all of us. The other day I saw a picture of her that someone posted on instgram of her two years ago at the homecoming footbhall game at Bonita. I started to cry hysterically, I just want that Katie back, but then I quickly realized that she is our Katie, she is just on a different journey now, and that is ok.
So thankful that she is healthy, happy, at home, in remission and living life again to the best of her ability now. God is so great. We are thankful for each and everyone of you that have been there for her and for us. We are truly blessed by God's graces.
