Katie Ortega's Journal
Written Feb 1, 2013 6:58pm
Katie is back to school and doing well at adjusting. It is very hard for her to sit in a room full of coughing and sneezing 17 yr olds. But she is doing the best she can to hang in there. She has been sick twice now since she went back to school.
Katie is still tired and weak and really doesn't want to do much away from home, which is ok with all of us. The other day I saw a picture of her that someone posted on instgram of her two years ago at the homecoming footbhall game at Bonita. I started to cry hysterically, I just want that Katie back, but then I quickly realized that she is our Katie, she is just on a different journey now, and that is ok.
So thankful that she is healthy, happy, at home, in remission and living life again to the best of her ability now. God is so great. We are thankful for each and everyone of you that have been there for her and for us. We are truly blessed by God's graces.

Happy New Year to you all from the Ortega Family. We had a wonderful Christmas and New Year celebration with Katie at home doing well. On January 2nd Katie woke you with an itchy, painful rash on her back. Her oncoligist determined it was shingles, the adult version of chicken poxs.
After 4 days of this rash it started to spread, so to be safe they admitted her for IV antibiotics and observation. She of course was not happy about this but was a trooper as usual. She is coming home today. She was supposed to start her senior year of high school today but that has now been postponed until next Monday.
Being back to work now, makes it difficult for me to post here as often as I like. I want to thank you all for the kind loving words that you have shared with us. It helped our family get through a very difficult time. Your thoughts, prayers and friendships mean the world to us.
You can continue to follow Katie's journey of recovery with us via Facebook if you like. Please request a friendship with me at https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/linda.d.ortega.
You can also text me or call me at 909-455-4430. I will be checking in here on Caringbridge from time to time. Thank you again, and I hope that you and your families have a wonderful, happy, and healthy 2013.
Lots of Love,

I am sorry for taking so long to update Katie's journal. After a brief stay in the hospital Katie was able to come home. She has been home for a little over a week now. She is so happy to be there and is doing well. She is getting stronger and stronger each day. Allie and I took her school clothes shopping over the weekend. We wore her out after about an hour of Victoria Gardens. She had all of yesterday to recooperate.
Happy Belated Thanksgiving to you all. We have so many things to be thankful for. We were able to travel to our son's house for Thanksgiving. He and his wife just bought a new house in Hanford. It was really good to see them, and visit with our grandchildren we haven't been able to see for 5 months now.
Tomorrow Katie will have her last bone marrow test. That is exactly what we are praying for her LAST one ever. When the results come back and she is still in remission, they will be able to remove her pic line. A day she is really looking forwad to. She will continue to have blood work done once a week, then every couple of weeks and the maybe once a month until they are sure the cancer is all gone.
In January she will be able to return to school for the second part of her senior year. She is so excited about that. She recently said "I never thought I would be so excited to go to school". Allie will love having her back at school also.
Please help us pray for friends of ours that have cancer. Nicholas, Aiden, Cheryl, Renee, Darius, Mike, Kimberlin,Amanda and Katie. We hate cancer.
I will remember to post again right after we get Katie's final test results. Thank you for you prayers, thoughts, meals, gift cards, donations. They have helped our family so much.
