My Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. It has been created to keep friends and family updated about our little girl, Kate Tyler.

Kate was born with a rare heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. We were given 4 options: abortion, compassionate care only, a series of 3 corrective surgeries, or a heart transplant.

Dear Kate,

Yesterday was Father's Day.  Since you are only 21 months old, I'm sure you don't fully grasp the meaning of Father's Day.  As your mommy, I wanted to write you this letter to tell you a little bit more about your daddy.  First of all, you adore him.  Every morning when I go into your room to get you from your crib (with your sleepy smile and crazy hair) you are happy to see me.  However, the first words you utter are, "daddy??".  You quickly give me a hug but you can't wait for me to put you down so you can toddle around the house in search of him.  When you find him you excitedly exclaim, "Daddy!!".  The look on both your faces is priceless.

Your daddy adores you as well.  It makes me smile when he notices your pretty pink toenails or your cute little pigtails.  You, too, are thrilled when he tells you how pretty you look in a sundress.  I'd love to know what he whispers in your ear to make you smile, but I guess that is a secret just between you and him.

He didn't leave your side for days after you were born.  He kept telling me that he thought you were the prettiest little girl he had ever seen.  He only left your side after he was told to by your nurses and only after he was convinced that you were in good hands.  He has never lost hope that you would survive.  I was so surprised at how quickly he learned all of the medical terminology and how he stepped up to the plate to handle your care when we were finally able to bring you home.

During session he would come at the end of the week (and a 4 hour drive home) to find us playing outside.  He would scoop you up in his arms and smother you with kisses.  The boys would ask him to shoot hoops or play football with them, which he would--still wearing his suit!  He could barely get his luggage in the door before all three of you would convince him to wrestle on our bed.  Those are some of the most precious moments.

Your daddy has set such a good example to your brothers on how to be a good daddy and for you on how a husband should treat his wife.  He is a hard worker but makes time for his family as well.  You are so blessed to have him as your daddy.

So, my sweet Kate, tonight when daddy comes home from work and whispers in your ear, will you whisper back how much your mommy loves him?  Then follow that up with one of your sweet kisses.  I know how much he loves your kisses!

Love,
Mommy
