Karen Smith's Journal
The book is done (almost)!!!
Written Dec 9, 2013 8:45pmAfter procrastinating for many months, I finally got back on this project after Thanksgiving and made a final push. Is it perfect (I'm sure it's not), but it's finally at a point where I'm going to have it ready for people who are interested at our first annual "Karen Smith's St. Patrick's Day Party". Thanks to the couple of friends that I've had look this project over, and to the ones who will help me with the finishing touches. I'm very proud of what Karen wrote, and I'm anxious to share it with everyone.
Just a quick update on the rest of the Smiths. All the boys are doing well at school, with Will and Cole staying busy with their sports, and Jake spending his free time on the computer. I continue to play "old man" soccer, and also help out as assistant coach on all the teams that Will and Cole play on. We all are looking forward to a trip to So. Cal over the Christmas break!
I'll be putting out our annual Christmas card sometime in the next 2 weeks. It's been a tough year, but we're hanging in there, and living our lives (as Karen would have wanted us to).
Peace and Love to all, and enjoy the holidays!
Quick Update - Smith's are doing OK
Written Oct 6, 2013 8:43pmHey Everyone - I know it's been a while, so I wanted to post and let you all know how the Smith's are.
We all spent the last 3 days at "Camp Magik", a grief camp run by professionals in the North Georgia Mountains. I think it was a pretty good experience, but found it heartbreaking to hear some of the other grief stories (murder, suicides, children passing, or combinations of the three). Cancer is an awful thing, but kids being murdered is senseless!
Anyway, after having all of us analyzed, we appear to be doing extremely well. We still have our moments, but have more good times than bad. I'm proud of our little family, and thankful that we have each other.
On to some other news. In the near future, the Billy Keane Foundation will be changing it's name to The Keane Foundation. It's focus will also be expanding to include helping families in crisis in the Atlanta/Greenville areas too. Along with this news, the Keane Foundation will be holding a fund raiser on or about St. Patricks day (March 17th) next year. As I know more details, they'll be posted on this and the Keane Foundation website.
Thanks for all the love, prayers, and support, and keep it coming.
And so another school year begins…
Written Aug 6, 2013 3:31pmHey everyone – just a quick note to let you know how things are going at the Smith household. I have had an emotional day today, and am not sure why, but think there are several triggers. First, I had to take Cole to “Sneak a Peak” at school to meet his teacher. Having to greet her and get her up to speed on our family situation choked me up (I’m choking up right now just writing this). Karen loved being involved in the children’s classes, and this also affected me. Anyhow, in some ways this is good (let’s Cole see that it’s OK to cry), but do I really need to ball in front of hundreds of people. For those of you that knew me in Elementary school, I was a crier back then, so you’re probably not surprised at all!The Second trigger was Will getting his braces off today!! I know Karen would have been so excited for this day that I know that was weighing on me.
Third – tomorrow is the 10 year anniversary of Karen’s parents being killed in a car accident. It’s been a rough decade that in my mind closes out tomorrow, and I think this also is going through my head.
Anyhow, I’m posting a picture of “the new and improved” Will, and wishing everyone a great school year. The Smith’s are going to be fine, even if I’m not quite as together as I thought I was.KirkPS – Spain was GREAT!! Will had a great time, but so did his old man!!
PPS – the Keane Foundation (formerly the Billy Keane Foundation) is having a social event on Saturday, August 24th in Ocean City NJ. I will post something on FB, but if any of you are around that area during this period, please come say hello.
